Why has this movie been so panned (no pun)? I always enjoyed it as a kid. Bangarang!

Great movie. My wife and I still watch it from time to time and of course my little girl loves it.

Not to mention one of my favorite soundtracks.

Exactly, panned by who? Critics? Critics, buncha lewd, crude, rude, bag of pre-chewed food dudes.

Let me first say that I love Hook.

But yes, it was roundly panned when it came out. One, the Lost Boys update into a bunch of skateboarding mini-X games athletes was pretty stupid, and an obvious marketing ploy to little kids. Secondly, it's amazing there was still a set left after all of the scenery Robin Williams chews in the movie. And finally, this was the first stage of the Julia Roberts backlash. She had been a fairly acclaimed actress for her early work like Mystic Pizza, but the explosion of Pretty Woman made her safe to beat up like a pinata among critics who resented her success. She's not the most dynamic of actresses, but what "movie star" is?

Most importantly, it didn't feel like a classic Spielberg film. The guy made ET, and Hook, a movie I do like, is no ET. No movie could live up to the expectations really.

But let me say that Dustin Hoffman totally owns this movie.

Hook is one of my all time favorites.

To the skateboarding stuff, that makes sense if you look at it as a modern day Pan, not a 19th or 20th century pan.

I still like it but I wonder if I would have ever enjoyed it as much had I seen it as an adult first.

It has a bunch of great ideas and Dustin Hoffman is great as Hook but overall it feels a bit hollow due to tonal shifts.

The entire attack on the pirate ship at the end is a mess and even as kid I was put off at how silly the kids weapons are when the pirates are willing to stab them in the chest.

Again, I still like the movie, but it really should have been much better considering the talent involved.
