Romney’s “Gift” Gaffe: What He Meant to Say

quote:

What another fine mess Mitt Romney has gotten himself into. In telling some of his big campaign contributors, on a Wednesday conference call listened in on by at least two reporters, that he lost the election because President Obama bestowed “gifts” on blacks, Hispanics, and young voters, the Mittster has brought another large heap of opprobrium down upon his finely chiseled numbskull, including some finely crafted words of criticism from my colleague Alex Koppelman. As usual with Romney, it’s hard to tell whether his biggest problem is his thorny relationship to the English language, his rich-guy empathy deficit, or his stunning disregard for, or obliviousness to, how his words will be received. Whatever the problem is, I thought, as a parting gift to someone who rarely failed to deliver for the campaign press, I’d do a quick translation. Here, then, is what, I’m sure, Romney meant to say:

But that must OK< it's politically correct and Chris Matthews agrees.

"Republicans need to overhaul their party and move left on the social issues, or they will be out of power for good"

Do you want welfare reform or just canning the whole program? Clinton already destroyed it in the 90s.

re: Romney’s “Gift” Gaffe: What He Meant to Say

quote:

But it wasn’t just a quid pro quo. Successful political parties aren’t just machines that deliver material benefits to their base. They are also about values—values that engender a sense of belonging and optimism among the voters, values which reflect what’s happening in the country. In embracing Hispanics, Asians, blacks, young voters, gays, and women, especially single women, the President signalled to these voters not only that he is on their side but that he believes they represent the future of the country, which, in demographic terms, they do. For decades, we Republicans have claimed to represent the real America, but increasingly we are the party of the past. That has to change. In needlessly alienating the groups that are growing fastest, we are cutting our own throats.

quote:

During the primaries, I should have stood up to the right more, especially on immigration and abortion. Saying I was “severely conservative” was another big error. It alienated moderates, and the conservatives and evangelicals in the Party didn’t believe it anyway. Once the primaries were over, I should have pivoted to the center a lot more quickly and picked a less polarizing running mate—preferably a certain hefty individual from New Jersey. Waiting until the first debate to display my moderate colors was crazy. We should have done it at the convention in Tampa. Sure, the conservative wing of the Party would have been miffed, and they might have caused some trouble, but the sight of them getting angry would have helped us with independent voters in places like Virginia and Florida.

quote:

Winning big majorities in conservative states like Oklahoma and Tennessee didn’t help us any, and it won’t help us in the future. If our party seriously wants to reëstablish itself as the national party of government, rather than a regionally based anti-government protest party that relies on redistricting to assure it a big presence in Congress, it simply has to become more moderate. The lesson of my candidacy—and of the candidacy of my predecessor, John McCain—is that putting a moderate, non-ideological figure at the top of the ticket isn’t enough. By the time he (or she) has done what is necessary to win the primaries, the voters no longer look upon him (or her) as a centrist.

Romney promised many gifts to his constituents as well. Fortunately for the country Obama had more constituents.

It's an amusing situation when observing factually correct information is considered a "gaffe".

This is America. Home of people who want to be leeches and for no one to notice or say anything about it.

We've become a pathetic nation.

And this paragraph is dumb. It ONLY makes sense if you view politics as purely a game where each team tries to win. Then, simply abandoning principles to win would make perfect sense.

If politics is about fighting for what you believe in, then the paragraph is dumb. You don't simply stop fighting because you're outnumbered. You fight on. And, if the nation never adjusts, then so be it.

Basically, what people are arguing now is equal to if someone had told blacks in 1920, "you're getting you arse kicked politically, you should just "moderate" your position on civil rights".

romney always came off as out of touch. He could have delivered the exact same message and looked like a gracious gentlemen. But he didn't.

The saddest part is this was the republican's "best" candidate. Anyone else who ran, other than ron paul, would have been trounced much worse.

"Gaffe" or whatever you wish to call it I would like him & Right Wing TV/radio to honestly 'name the minorities'.

I would just love to hear Romney & O'Reilly/Limbaugh,etc....tell us not just Hispanics,Blacks & others want free stuff ,but others like Jewish Americans as well.

I would love to hear O'Reilly tell us how Jews who vote overwhelmingly Democrat (typically around 80%)would never refuse 'free stuff'.

The Jewish Community voted 90% for both LBJ & FDR & not even Blacks supported them at those percentages.

Until Romney can publicly call out Jewish voters as well he is a pandering coward ,just like O'Reilly, who doesn't deserve the Presidency.

I would just love for O'Reilly or Romney to go on TV & suggest Jews are 'leeches' or 'greedy' & want that free stuff for Government.

Jews are socialist usually. Remember Mr. Marx?
They also fear persecution and want a brown nation. View it as safer for them.
