Free Credit Report website

What are the government websites to get your free credit reports?

I searched, nothing came up.

TIA

I don't know about any govt sites, but I use CreditKarma. It's really free. No credit card required.

Just FYI the gov't only requires them to give you your credit report... This does not include your credit score

Not sure how you searched, but its the first result when you search for "free credit report"

LINK /

You get one per year from all three bureaus. And, as it has been stated, this is only the report, not a score.

Annual Credit Report

It was mentioned before, just reiterating this is the only correct answer for free credit reports. You can get it free once per year.

The freecreditreportdotcom is not free, they enroll you in a monitoring service after ____ days.

If you want a general free score (1) then go to Credit Karma as somebody else mentioned. I believe these use Transunion.

re: Free Credit Report website
My Credit score is 761. It was like 800 last year... I don't know why it went down.

I did open a new credit card recently.

re: Free Credit Report website
thanks!!!

creditkarma was a great site.

my credit is 777..my worest score is a "C" under "average age of open credit cards" since it shows 4.8 years.

i always close old accounts..i don't like having a bunch of credit lines open that i never use.

i had no idea i was hurting myself by 'cleaning up' these accounts

cool site..lots of good info.

ETA LOVE THE SIMULATOR!! WOW this is like the best website i've seen this month! thanks again!

run the simulator on credit karma. its fascinating to watch how different things affect it.

my score is down too..apparently i should have left the LSU alumni credit card i opened in 1990 open...

More than likely most of the drop is due to you new home and car debt... Doubt paying off that card is going to affect it much

Is credit karma accurate? I don't really understand what's happening with my score. I bought a house in December and had a score of 789. Just bought a car a month ago and it was 712. I attributed that to keeping ~33% balance on a 0% credit card and buying a car for the wife in March. I've paid the credit card down to get my score back up. Checked today, and credit karma says I have a 660!!!. I'm hoping that I can just continue to pay everything for the next year and my score shoots back up. But I don't know what the hell caused it to drop so much.

CreditKarma is a good free way to see what's on your credit but it isn't always accurate. My FICO score (which is what lenders use) is about 30 points higher than my CreditKarma score right now. The scoring models weigh the variables differently. Your FICO score will be maximized if you pay that card down to less than 10% but still keep a small balance on it. I use MyFico.com and have played around with my score, leaving different balances on my cards just to see how it affects the score. I keep a 0 balance on all my credit cards and less than 10% on one. That seems to be the sweet spot for most people.

Here is a real life scenario from this past month. Scores don't differ too too much:

Myfico:
Transunion 776
Equifax 763

Identity guard:
Transunion 778
Equifax 754
Also get Experian

Credit Karma (i think that is Transunion?):
754

Credit karma seems to be 22-24 points off from what everybody claims to be the "gold standard" with Fico scores. So it is a pretty good estimator of what creditors look at. It is a really good site to prevent fraud and being able to simulate a score if _______ happens.

Have been trying to determine whether myfico or Identity guard is better and they both seem to be very close to each other. Like ID guard better because you can get all 3 scores and reports as opposed to only 2 from Myfico.

re: Free Credit Report website

my score as 818

thats impressive.

i have never actively done anything to make my credit score go up or down (i dont know how) but try to be conservative in how i spend money & manage loans.

i guess common sense works to a certain degree but i never realized 'average age of open credit cars' was a statistic i needed to grow.

so yes, 818 is very good. since i only have one cc with any balance on it (except my gas card) does that hurt me?

You should carry a small balance on one and pay the others to a zero balance before the statement posts every month. You need to use the cards to keep the creditor from closing them, though. If they close them, that will lower your "Average Age of Accounts."
