I was reading this. I know a lot of people don't like Ubisoft for their draconian DRM measures but they do have a point here.

quote:

"The advantage of F2P is that we can get revenue from countries where we couldn't previously - places where our products were played but not bought. Now with F2P we gain revenue, which helps brands last longer.

quote:

"It's a way to get closer to your customers, to make sure you have a revenue. On PC it's only around five to seven per cent of the players who pay for F2P, but normally on PC it's only about five to seven per cent who pay anyway, the rest is pirated. It's around a 93-95 per cent piracy rate, so it ends up at about the same percentage. The revenue we get from the people who play is more long term, so we can continue to bring content."

But Ubisoft is, especially if they actually believe those numbers.

It's understandable why people pirate, PC companies make systems and processes that make it MORE difficult for the paying customer to play. DRM never hurts the pirate, it hurts the buyer.

Internet Connection required for single player games hurts the buyer, not the pirate.

It's all completely ridiculous.

Of course it is and they know it.. such a dumb statement. Steam has been to the gaming industry what iTunes was for the music industry.

If you tell me piracy is a problem, I'm inclined to believe you.

But 95%? Gimme a break, ubisoft. Who do you think you're fooling?

They believe the same thing as the Music industry. Or at least as the music industry did.

So F2P is the future of unimaginative sequel console ports from bloated corporations that haven't put out a decent game in 10 years? Thanks for that important update Ubisoft!

Here's my all time favorite Ubisoft quote:

as some of our games did not meet the required quality levels to achieve their full potential they need more sales promotions than anticipated

I'm not buying this statement at all. PC gamers pirate shite so they don't have to pay $60 dollars for a single game. The percentage of games being pirated I can bet has remained mostly unchanged since DRM has become prevalent.

I didn't mean as the main reason no. But the only way to stop doesn't do ANYTHING. It will never stop pirates, and it makes it harder on buyers.

I should say, Not that it started out that way, but it's becoming that way. Heck, if I buy a non-Steam, non-Online game, most likely I'll buy a copy and leave it boxed, download the pirated edition. Did my duty buying it, but I'm not dealing with DRM.

I completely agree with you on this.

Pretty good idea. If I wasn't such an a-hole little kid I might have done this. I guess DRM wasn't really a problem back then tho.

Well that's rare now. There are good F2P games. Or games that are meant for online (GW2). I admit, the single player game should never go away, but having to be online to platy LA Noire is ridiculous.

If 95% of people are pirating PC software and its still profitable, then I think we just found the most lucrative industry and sought after commodity in the world.

I've pirated a few games due to one reason.

Warcraft 3 - Bought the game, lost my cd key, pirated to finish single player. Before battle.net released.

GTA IV - pirated before steam, bought the game on steam

Sim ant - bought it, can't find it anymore, played on dos box

Conquest of the New World - bought it, can't find it, played on dos box

Modern Warfare - Shitty PC integration, pirated for single player, bought MW2 on steam. Never going back to the CoD series on PC due to lack of support on the PC side.

For me it has always been an availability issue.
