My wife just texted me that our daughter collected about 50 and wants to bring them home and cook them.

Update:
Well I cooked about 3 dozen in a sauce pan with a little butter olive oil and lemon (didn't really matter how they were cooked). Almost inedible. Were gritty and tasted like mud. Moral is you could live off em but they taste like shite.

Thanks for the advice guys.

Yeah, I'm not there to see them so I don't know what they are.

yeah,if they're the same black ones at the sand bar in Lake Maurepas, there's thousands of them there and I've never taken them home to eat.

Never heard of anyone eating them, fun to collect (or throw) nonetheless.

Does that mean they like to soak up chemicals and pollutants?

Lake Borgne is full of those near Bayou Thomas. I trawled there and found out I need rollers.....

How do you prepare them? Steam? Grill?

We usually soak them in water for a few hours first. Then we steam them open and make a dipping sauce for it. A mixture of fish sauce, lime, ginger, chilis, and a little sugar. With the left overs calms, we take all the meat out and make a congee(rice porridge) out if it or zip lock it in the freezer for a rainy day.

My parents have stir fried it with lemon grass, salt, pepper, chilis, and curry before. It came out pretty good. I'm sure you can sauteed it over a pan like they do mussels... but we've never tried it.

Actually took some home and tried cooking them about a month ago. Very gritty. Not worth it IMO

Ginger gives it a lot of bite. Don't know if you ever had fish sauce before but if you haven't, you should probably go light on it. It's potent.
