Buying a boat with cash. Need to withdraw 4 grand from my checking account. Do banks have a limit for cash withdraw or do I just walk in that bitch and get 4 grand?

You just walk in. ATM withdrawals are limited usually.

What ever amount you have in your checking account they will give it to you. If the bank actually has a limit...close your account immediately!

edit:

All ATMs have limits for security reasons

Of course you can. It's your money. They are just holding it.

Well I have 8 grand in my checking. I was just wondering if banks had a set limit on cash.

In your case, the limit should be 8 grand.

Tellers have cash drawer limits, usually $25k. But, she will go to the cash vault to get more for you. If you are withdrawing hundreds of thousands, then there could be a delay. Branches try not to carry too much money, cause the bank doesn't make any interest with it sitting in a vault.

I had to cash a 15K check at Chase. They had to go to two other banks to get that amount of cash. I was like WTF? This is a bank right? Closed my shite down with them after that crap.

This makes no sense to me. This is what they told you? I've worked in banking for almost 20 years and have never seen or heard of something like this happening. I'm not saying you are making it up...just sounds crazy it would happen to someone, especially at a large bank.

4 grand is not a lot, but I would call first and make arrangements.

As a former head teller, cashing a 15k check should not be a problem. You did the right thing by closing your account. At the location i worked at, we kept at least 200k in the safe.

does the seller want cash only? I would feel much safer walking around with a $4000 cashiers check than cash.

When you get to 10K there is paperwork to fill out, but not a huge deal

You get scared carrying around 40 100s for a short period of time?

In the age of photoshop, there are too many phony cashiers checks out there.

When I bought my son a used car in 2008, the buyer did not want cashiers check. I made prior arrangements at the bank for the cash and we met in the lobby.

He walked out of there with the cash, I did not.

My husband's aunt cashed a check to pay her roofer who wanted cash. She was followed out of the bank and she was robbed.

As long as you go to a real branch you are fine. The satellite branches in supermarkets carry a very limited supply of cash.

I worked at several different branches of a bank while in college. It's a balancing act. Cash is a liability if your branch gets robbed and like LSUBanker said, you don't earn interest on cash in the vault or in teller draws.

A teller saying that they don't have 15K sounds suspicious, but what I can imagine happening (I've seen something similar) is someone walking into a bank wanting to cash a large check on a payday Friday, early afternoon.

The head teller might believe that the branch will run out of 100s before close and might try to talk the customer into either depositing some or taking a cashiers check (no fee of course). But I've never heard of a bank turning away a customer.

Now, if you don't have accounts there, I can see some tellers BSing you just so you go to another branch. Is it possible that they didn't know you were a customer of the bank?
