per Mike Triplett and Jeff Duncan (twitter)

ETA: Since Benson talked to Drew today and said that the deal is "close," I have faith he gets signed before Monday.

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees is not planning to come to New Orleans on Monday for the start of the team's offseason conditioning program. Although Owner Tom Benson said Friday that Brees is due in town next week, the unsigned quarterback is not planning to attend without a contract, according to a source close to Brees.

"It is very upsetting to him not being there Monday," the source said. "He wants to be there for his teammates."

While talking about his decision to purchase the New Orleans Hornets, Benson said he spoke to Brees this morning and feels like the two sides are "close" to a long-term contract extension. So far, however, there has been no other indication from league sources that a deal is imminent. Talks have been practically non-existent in recent weeks, as both sides appear willing to let the standoff linger past the start of the offseason workout program.

Most likely, both sides will look to the start of OTAs (organized team activities) in mid-May as a more urgent deadline, when players will actually start practicing on the field.

So Benson seems to think they're close. Brees doesn't plan to come without a deal. It's really a non story. We knew this already.

Doesn't Brees workout with his San Diego based trainer?

I will be worried if he misses mini-camp and OTAs.

First, it's not the start of the season. Second, I never saw anyone said he HAD to play with the tag. I think everyone understands he can sit out if he wants to.

Everyone knows he wasnt showing up without a long term deal. When Benson said he spoke with Drew and he believes the sides are close it is probably accurate. The two sides have most likely been close for a while but they just cant agree on a couple things. I have faith Loomis will get this done maybe not by Monday, but by OTA time.

I hope they can get Brees a long term deal. There is no way he can raise thoses 3 kids on selling Jimmy John's sandwiches alone.

I personally think it is great that Brees owns a sandwich franchise...but I have been dissapointed everytime Ive eaten at the JJ here in ST Pete. Hopefully it is better in NOLA.

I don't know why this is even a story. The only way he would show up without a long term deal would for him to sign his tender, and he's not doing that and wiping away his leverage.

Worried about not having the leader of the team on the field with new teammates and old. Especially with what's been going on. It would be a huge positive for the organizations moving forward.
