usually only post on the food and drink board, so forgive me in advance if this is a topic that gets covered often. through growing up hunting and the military, i've handled rifles and shotguns my whole life but little experience with handguns. got my first handgun for christmas and i've put 250-300 rounds through it at the local indoor range. given that i have little experience purchasing handgun ammunition, i had a few questions on range ammo:

1. what is considered a reasonable or good price on 9mm range ammo? in other words, what should i be looking to pay per 50 round box?

2. are there any good websites for bulk (500-1000 rds)? what kind of bulk prices should i be looking for (what represents a good deal?). and given the weight, is shipping going to offset any savings i get from ordering bulk online?

3. any brands that people recommend for reliable/cheap range ammo? any cheap brands that should be avoided?

thanks in advance...

Winchester white box...remington also makes good ball ammo.

In 50 round boxes...prices from 11-15 dollars a box is what I have seen lately.

Look at Cheaper than dirt / Midway USA for bulk buys just remember you will have to factor in shipping.

Local Gun shows are also places you can look for cheap range ammo in bulk quantities.

for price, academy has blazers for about 12 bucks per 50, heavy on the powder, but good range time

bulk ammo, shipping kills you, you need to look around for free shipping specials

The cost savings aren't worth the filth to me...the primers on that shite flake like crazy, not to mention the dirty powder.

I also find Magtech ball ammo to be dirty as well. Another one I try to avoid.

Walmart is the cheapest ammo I've found. They have 100 Rd federal and Winchester for around 20 a box.

The range ammo is probably inflated due to convenience.

Academy and Wal-Mart has good prices on range ammo. Cabelas usually has a good selection of range ammo, slightly higher than Walmart/Academy, but they sell in bulk.

Shipping is high on bulk ammo because of the weight, but websites like cheaperthandirt have the best prices. You may have to due some pricing around, but I'd be willing to bet you can find a better price than what the range offers.

Academy used to sell Remington UMC 250rd boxes for around $50-70. I'm not sure they do any more though.

yeah, i haven't purchased any ammo at the range. was pretty pricey.

thanks for all the info. i'll do some research on the websites suggested. i like the idea of buying in bulk for convenience but if the shipping is going to kill the savings, it may not be a good route. in any event, i'll do some shopping around and see what makes sense.

i've been heading to the range every other week; it is pretty clear that between range fees and ammo, this new hobby is going to get expensive fast...

CCI blazer works fine in my G19. I have shot literally thousands of rounds of it. Between 2004 and 2006. When...

I could get them in BR for $3.48 per box of 50 but sadly not any more.

As long as you clean your pistol after using it at the range I don't see any problem with CCI.

www.cheaperthandirt.com
www.sportsmansguide.com has 500 rounds of Wolf 115 grain 9mm ball for $93.07. That's about as cheap as it gets nowadays.
9mm Wolf ball ammo

YMMV

All I put through my ruger.

ETA: I have a buddy that orders them in bulk for me and absorbs the shipping. Its roughly $150 for 1500 rounds.

I don't buy much practice ammo since I handload, but I can't help but check the prices when I do go to a store. My only options when I drive to S'port include Academy, Bass Pro and Wal-Mart. Sad to say, WM usually has the best price. When I buy, it's more aften 45 acp than 9mm. Seems like cheapest WM price is typically Winchester White Box at $22-24.

I find the CCI Blazer is very clean in 9mm (compared to WWB, UMC and Magtech). Not quite so clean in .45 ACP (different powder). Of course I could be wrong --- my experience is limited to slightly over 130,000 rounds of the 9mm Blazer that I have personally fired through my pistols (along with fairly substantial quantites of WWB and Magtech).

If you want to shoot some really dirty (but cheap) ammo, try the Russian stuff (Wolf, Silver Bear, etc). I choose not to shoot that stuff.

Prices have come down a lot in the past 18 months. You can buy 9mm Blazer at Natchez Shooter Supplies for $8.99 a box (50 rounds) if you buy 10 or more boxes. LINK

Shipping isn't so bad on 9mm Blazer --- the online shipping calculator at NSS says total shipping on 40 boxes (2 cases) is about $30 to Baton Rouge. That's about what sales tax would run if I bought it at a local store (assuming I could find it locally for $9/box).
