A basketball blast from the past

I'm watching an old LSU-Kentucky game from about 1985. It was played in the Assembly Center. Some of the guys on that team: John Williams, Don Redden, Derrick Taylor, Oliver Brown, Jerry Reynolds, Nikita Wilson, Jose Vargas, etc. Kentucky had Kenny Walker, Winston Bennett, James Blackmon, Ed Davender, and those guys. The announcers said that LSU was pre-season #1. I sure don't remember that!
LSU won that game and won the SEC on the process.
A funny moment, one of the announcers said this about a late LSU timeout when Kentucky was making a little comeback:
"They are not known as a smart team. He wants to keep his offense simple and his defense simple. He rarely over-coaches. You don't give Beethoven's Fifth to the Harmonicats. He doesn't make his guys think."

i thought you were gonna post some Jabari Funk Dunks to boost the morale around here

Crankbait, LSU won but Kenny Walker had the dunk of the day. He had a bad day but late in the game he SLAMMED it in Jerry Reynold's face. The announcer said that Reynold's was looking for the license plate number of that truck. LOL!

Was that the year Dayton or Navy blasted us in the first round?

Yes, Navy did spank us---I guess 1986 was REALLY the great team! At least we HAD a team during those years!

'86 was a great memory. We were fortunate to have played the first two games at home that year, but that happened sometimes in those days. We beat two good teams after that so we earned it. But probably don't get there without the early round homestand.

That's when I was there too. One year, we had Shaq, Stanley Roberts, Chris Jackson, Maurice Williamson, Vernell Singleton (I think), and several other good ones on the same team. How did we not get to the Final Four?!?!?
Didn't Navy have David Robinson on that team that blasted us?

John Williams was a great player. Sad how he couldn't beat his eating disorder and make millions of dollars.

That was back in the good ole days when we recruited on a national level. Dale was a hell of a recruiter.
Dale literally recruited from coast-to-coast, and that team showed it. John Williams was from Los Angeles, California and Jerry "Ice" Reynolds was from Brooklyn, New York.

Offense, maybe.
But I don't think anybody could describe Dale's Freak Defense as "simple".

I think that was the year we lost to a pretty talented GA Tech team that went on to the Final Four.

I think we lost to UTEP that year

A few things I remember both about LSU basketball in the early 90's & late 80s.
Chris Jackson cross over dribble and stop and pop for 3.
Shaquille running the point on fast breaks.
Vernel Singleton's band aid under the eye.
The big games in the Superdome (Georgetown, etc.)
Absolutely phenomenal talent.

Very good friend of mine when I was going to LSU. The day he passed away was a very sad one for me.

that's b/c no one could describe it at all.

the purdue and memphis st games were the most exciting and loudest games i ever attended at the assembly center.

I had classes with Oliver Brown. We were in Mechanical Engineering together. Sharp guy. I would watch him play a late weekday game say at Ole Miss and then be in 7:30am class the next morning. I thought I had it rough just making it to that class.

We all aging ourselves in this one. Those 80's teams were some fun teams to watch. Nikita, Hot Rod, Jose Vargas, hell I will even throw in some Gert Hammick
Oliver brown the defensive specialist.
Hell that's when I used to love watching some LSU college basketball.
