Pick me. My LSU days were 1978-1983. Spent many hours standing in line at the PMAC waiting for the doors to open in the student section for the seat fight to begin.
That lineup with "E", Rudy, Scales, Greg "Cookieman" Cook was unbelievable. The Astronaut had some of the most athletic dunks for a 6'-9" guy ever.
Also enjoyed watching "Hi-C" Carter & Al Green--two of the smoothest players ever to suit up for the Tigahs.

Well...to be fair, he did tear up his knee

Hi-C carter was one of the best shooters to play at LSU--The cookieman was the enforcer inside, Ethan Martin was pure sugar at the point guard position, Scales could fly and of course Rudy was a magnificent player. Great teams in those years--the 1981 team was the best in the country ---and lost to indiana in final four semis--still a mystery why they lost, but things happen. Maybe we can return to those days where the Tigers are competitive every year.

They lost because Rudy dinged up his middle finger on his shooting hand at the end of the Regionals. And Isaiah Thomas.

Boy those late 70's early and mid 80's were fun. There was nothing like it. Sad to say all those teams were full of juniors and seniors. I miss those days and because of the NBA we may never see those days again. All we have today are stories of what ifs, what if stromile would stayed, or brandon bass, or tyrus. No one was waving millions of dollars in shaqs face or chris jacksons face. In those days you signed a kid and you knew you had him at least three year possibly four. Reading this has made me realize and remember the good ole days of LSU bb. We have had some really good times here. I will never forget watching Chris Jackson IMO besides Pete the best ever to play here. The three final four runs I have seen in my life were things I will never forget, those sweet sixteen weekends we had going to the final four was epic. Beating wake forest in the dome and dale running off the court, beating kentucky in atlanta when we had no business on the same floor with them. Beating Duke the #1 seed and texas in overtime in atlanta was awesome. We have had so many highlights over the past 30 years it makes me wonder when the next one is coming. When is the next time we see a guy fake behind his back and slam it like jabari did, or jump to the top of the backboard and slam like tyrus did against arky or a guy score 50 like CJ did many times. We sure seem to be a long way from those days...just saying

Yeah, we had John "Hot Plate" Williams...

This.
I still maintain that if Dale moves Howard Carter into Rudy's spot, and starts Willie Sims as the 2-guard for that game, we win it all that year.

Oli Brown as a defensive specialist. Then Lineer (sp?) Burns was a defensive specialist a few years later if I'm remembering correctly.
Are you thinking about Bernard Woodside?

Funny little FYI, a few years back ESPN had this what if the greatest players from each school got together and had a tournament. So LSU's team had Shaq at center, Macklin and Petit at foward, with CJ and Maravich as guards. Pretty impressive. And LSU rolls through the tournament of 64 other colleges until they finally meet UNC in the final four, with McAdoo, Jordan, Worthy, etc... Well, to determine the winner, they posted an online poll which anybody could vote in with the winner being whomever got more votes. And since they weren't really good at keeping track of who had voted and who hadn't. My buddy, who's in the IT industry, wrote a program to stuff the ballot box so that LSU would upset UNC. Alas, ESPN caught on, and threw out the results, and declared UNC the winner.

They mention a little about the cheating in the link below, but it's behind ESPN's pay wall

Talent-wise, they really were comparable. We have had several all-time greats on all levels of basketball. However, we get out-coached in that game 9 times out of 10. Their coaching pedigree is infinitely better than ours.

"think that was the year we lost to a pretty talented GA Tech team that went on to the Final Four."
That was the year, and CJ was sick and contributed all of about 5 points. Those were two very talented teams, but we win that game is CJ is healthy.
Also, people tend to forget that we only had all that talent for one year, and during that year, Shaq and Stanley were so raw and foul-prone that you could not play them in the game at the same time, or at least not for very long. In today's game, you may well rip through the tourney with that team on talent alone but teams were so much better back then without early entry to the draft being quite so rampant that it was harder to do.
By the way, my recollections of the Ga. Tech game are purely from memory, but I think the game went to OT. Gt featured Dennis Scott and a couple of other top players; I want to say they went by "Lethal Weapon 3" or something like. Disappointing that LSU did not make a deeper run like in 86 or 87 but it was still fun to have a real team that could beat anyone.

Well said. While that team did have some losses that were just inexcusable--regardless of basically anything--they were very young and raw. Hard to believe they started out #2 in the nation in the polls. Yes,I'm well aware of what the Fab Five did at Michigan, but that was highly unusual. But I think the 1989-90 team is unfairly maligned. They should have won the SEC that year but I remember Tiger Rag having CJ,Shaq and Roberts on the cover of their basketball guide on skis as the Final Four was in Denver.
BTW,whatever happened to Randy Duvall? Best I remember he was a transfer for one year and was about 24 the one year he played.

The most dreaded words on the radio broadcast in those days: "Woodside- from the outside." I can still hear Hawthorne saying it now.
