Anyone have any good suggestions on where to get a good set of kitchen knives that isn't terribly expensive (I'll spend up to $100)? The 2 I've owned were given to me, and were pretty freaking crappy. Something like this is what I have in mind:

$100 is kind of a no mans land for knife sets

I would either spend $50 on a nice victorinox chef's knife and paring knife or spend $200 and get a decent Wusthof or Henckels set.

Maybe that's my problem. The one's I've had were gifts, so I know they aren't higher end. Maybe it's worthwhile to spend a little more. Thanks.

Don't waste money on a set.

Start with a good Chef's/French knife and paring knife. Any of the well known brands (Global, Shun, Wusthof, Henckel, etc.) are fine, but it's important that you handle as many as possible to find what fits your hand best. Invest in the appropriate steel for that knife as well.

Prime rib does taste 8x better when the carving knife and steak knives are from the same set. Good point.

The Kaji is not your typical Shun...they have much, much cheaper knives.

I have Shun and they are really nice. Although, $1,200 may be a bit out of your range. I would buy 1 nice knife with the $100 if it was me.

Bingo! You don't need a set of knives.

What you do need:
French Chef Knife
Carving Knife and Fork
Paring Knife
Bread Knife
Any other knife you want in the future

I have an expensive meat cleaver and butcher knife too. I've never used either one.

ETA: You also might want to invest in some good scissors.

Medtiger,

You are not going to like that cheap Henckels set. They are not made of good steel and they will feel cheap in your hand. Henckels makes some fine knives, just not those.

This is about as cheap as you can go for a decent set of Henckels Professionals (7 pc set for $235)

You can add to the set one knife at a time. These will last you a lifetime.

Seems like you're suggesting a set of knives to me.

How can you tell that the ones you linked are better than the ones I linked just by looking at the pics? Not being a smartass...I legitimately don't see a difference.

You are talking Ronco at that price level. Go to Fantes.com and check out what they have to offer.
