| Bespoke suits in Shanghai or Hong Kong? (Posted on 12/26/11 at 8:53 am)
Anybody done this? I figured this may be a better question for the Money Talk as opposed to the OT. I'll be going the Shanghai for sure and possibly a stop in HK in May. I am considering having a custom tailored suit made while I'm there. If so, where did you go and any insights or recommendations?

I've never done a custom suit before. I've been told that I should expect to pay $700 - 1,000. I'd probably like to keep it around a grand or so.. You probably know more than I do.

Anthony Boursain had a suit made in Hong Kong for under 400. Check out the "layover" in hong kong. I figure if it's good enough for him, it's probably pretty good.

My husband still owns 2 suits he bought 25 years ago in Hong Kong. He uses Baron Kay's Baron Kays Hong Kong The price depends on the fabrics you choose. They keep your measurements on file and years ago they even would come to select cities in the US. Very reputable. Fast Service. It has been about a decade since he has been back, but they are still in business.

If you want true bespoke (your own pattern, a wide range of high quality fabrics, measurements followed by several fittings, fully canvassed, hand sewing, etc) you probably have to forget about the $400 stuff. Can you get something at that price? Sure, but you're going to get something probably fused with glue, shitty fabrics, and generally poor quality relative to what you can get mid-high end RTW. If you go true bespoke with a good tailor you'll have something that is exactly what you want and will probably last the rest of your life. The best well known bespoke tailor in that area, that travels anyway, is probably WW Chan ( WW Chan). They have locations in Shanghai and Hong Kong, and they travel with a regular and reliable schedule, so if you did use them and have something made, it would be easier to order new stuff in the future. What you pay will be dependent on what fabric you choose, but you're probably looking at $1-1.5K for a jacket, $1.2-2K for a two piece suit. Now, that's not cheap, but it's comparable for what you'd pay for high end ready to wear, but it's going to fit a lot better and you can have it made in any style with whatever details you want. That's about half to 2/3 what you'd pay for Savile Row or Naples bespoke and I know a lot of guys who use Chan and have some really good looking jackets and suits.

I've used Hemranjani Bros. for my suits for several years now, have always been quite happy with them. I get the suit but not the shirts or ties though, I prefer other vendors for those.

After arriving in HK or Shanghai there is literally a bespoke tailor at very corner. Several of my friends had suits made. Most were well satisfied and have been pleased with them. The WW Chan suits really seemed best IMHO when looking at overall quality.

So how do these suits stack up against your nicer American or European suits?

In Hong Kong, Himark Martin Tailors are the best tailors to buy tailoring clothes. The suits which are made by them are looking so good and attractive.
