My dad's been out of fishing for a while and recently bought a bay boat. He has been wanting one for a long time and LOVES going down to Big Lake. Anyway, for Christmas I bought him a Falcon rod to try to help update his gear and now I want to get him a nice reel to go with it. I've fished salt water a little and have always used "cheap" reels as to not screw up my good gear. Was wondering what you boys think is a good reel that will hold up to the saltwater. I bass fish with Curados and love em, but am reluctant to bring them down there.

Thanks.

Stick with the "cheap" reels. Salt water is salt water. And you don't need the finess for trout and reds like you do with bass

Keep an eye out for anything Diawa they just revamped their line, and are closing out alot of reels. You can get Coastal spinners for $129 or less, or a freshwater Exceler for $59-$79. I had 3 of those that lasted a long time in saltwater.

The Penn Battle is a hell of a reel for $99 bucks or an Okuma Trio is a good value for $79

If baitcaster is what you need Shimano Citiga or the older Diawa Coastal both can be had for $79

Don't need finess for trouts and reds?? Think that might not be A true statement. Have you ever fished for reds in 1ft of water? Or trout in the winter? Plus the finess part is gonna be taken care of with the rod. Buy a curado or it's slightly cheaper cousin the citica. I have a few of both. They have only been used for inshore fishing for reds and specks. 1 of which I bought in 2000 that has been cleaned only a couple times and still works well. Clean them with fresh water really well afterwards and they will be fine.

Yeah. You need finesse for trout but that usually comes from the rod. The best reels are made by shimano. Their best is the chronach but curados are good too.

Penn Spinfisher is a nice reel. You can get one for about $80.

Also if they break down the line you can get parts pretty easy and they also have repair/service centers or any reel repair shop can work with them.

Okuma has lifetime warranties. I used Shimano but my last two have been Okuma because of the warranty. I havent really noticed much of a difference between the two

Curado all the way.
If I'm not using the fly rod for reds and trout

It's curados.

Or my old citacas.

All on falcon tackle

I only fish spinning reels so I wont be much help.

I use the ABU Garcia 502 and 503 ALBi.
String them with 12# Big Game (green).
Never let me down.

Use them on that too if I'm fishing artificial.

Have caught literally thousands of trout on this and many Redfish up to 15 pounds, Flounder too.

And 1 angry Pelican.

H20 Mettle at academy. I have two of them for about two years, never had any problem with them. Cheap price at $50 and supposedly has a lifetime warranty.

Catching trout on light tackle is more fun IMHO FWIW YMMV
