Has anyone ever heard of this kind of thing in the restaurant industry?

Gimme $25

If you want to work at the burger joint (Stanley), that's also $25 to apply!

Probably get only pretty serious applicants that way...

Is it illegal to charge to apply?

That's insulting.

His new drink shop next to Stanley, which serves drinks, milkshakes, and sandwiches, sort of like Butcher, but not really, isn't very good. $7 for a milkshake that isn't as good as Baskin Robbins.

FYI, Stanley somehow serves 700-900 people every day now. That's insane.

No.
I can see the rationale for doing it possibly. If they get bombarded with applicants(50/week??), then it takes serious time to really go through and find the ones who would legitimately have the resume to work at a place like Stella!, but I still think it's over the top. I had to go through some pretty shitty applications when I was managing a restaurant, but I actually enjoyed the bad ones.

$7 and it's a to-go milkshake with a candied cherry on top. I thought I'd get something special at that price, like a fresh cherry or something Stella-esque, but no.

That and the superiority persona the restaurant is trying to exude.

Sounds like good time management, cutting out all the BS aps one has to wade through every day to get to the serious applicants.

Apartment complexes charge to apply for residence. I see no reason a restaurant shouldn't either. The reasoning behind both is probably quite similar.

Exactly my thoughts as well. Need to get over themselves. The one time I dined at Stella I would pretty disappointed in the food, considering the price tag.

Right off the bat when we sat down.. "Here's our caviar list sir. Starts at $150." I was like then I was like

He does, and matches it, by returning $50. But that doesn't negate the initial insult.

The thing I find interesting is that he constantly uses Craigslist to find employees. So he's obviously a gargantuan cheapskate as well.

I was only thinking that he turns applicants away in droves, since it's such a highly regarded place!

I'm sure it hurt his ego to put it in Avondale.
