Per Insider****

Kevin Sumlin is finally in the fold as Texas A&M's new head coach. Now, he has a staff to fill out. It may begin with the hiring of the crucial defensive coordinator position.

"Aggies, sources tell me that LSU defensive backs coach Ron Cooper is a strong possibility as defensive coordinator," Lance Zierlein of the Houston Chronicle tweeted.LINK

I am hearing the same thing from other sources, but they may be echo-chambering that link.

Good hire, IMO. Can we have Tyrann Mathieu as well?

Well after LSU wins the ship, he will get a big raise I would guess. I know it isn't all about the money, but that would help.

The guy may be a good position coach, but he is horrible as a DC.

It will be too much for the Honey Badger to bear, with his position coach leaving. He will need to transfer. I suppose we will have to go ahead and take Matthieu with Coach Cooper, if we must....

For the love of God we gotta pay the man Also tack on as many defensive passing game coordinator/assistant head coaching titles as he wants as part of the deal

dude, chill. we'll find a good db coach. i'm sure people will line up with the db talent on this team and money we pay.

vance bedford would be a good choice. see if he wants to make more than 300k.

It would be a HUGE loss if Coop leaves. Huge. He did wonders at SC and now our DBs are all solid...doesn't matter who we put on the field. The technique he teaches is as good as it gets. Pay the man and give him what ever title he wants

But does A&M want to take a position coach to be it's next DC? The faithful didn't exactly seem thrilled to get Sumlin and they might want someone with "skins on the wall" as a DC. OR do A&M fans rationalize:

Ron Cooper = best DB's in the country = Top 2 overall defense?

Exactly. He's a great DB coach, and he's been a DC before. His defense was awful. Just because you are a great position coach doesn't always translate well into gameplanning and actually calling defensive plays.

Let me say this. If Coach Cooper were to get a DC job, I'm glad for him and I'm all about people bettering themselves. If I'm a aTm fan, I'm skeptical of this hire.

If offered a DC job at a big time SEC school, you take it. Money is not going to keep in in BR.

I know he had the DC title at Moo State. wasn't he also essentially DC at South Car for a yr or 2, but with the title "Asst HC"?

Let Coach Coop go. He did a great job and deserves DC job. Hate it is at SEC school. He just will lose at least once a year. GEAUX TIGERS!

Something fishy is going on here. I bet his wife ran her mouth too much.
