The play that changed LSU football

Obviously it was more than one play that turned LSU football in the 2000's and maybe LSU would have been great without it...but I will always point to one play that changed LSU from football mediocrity to elite. It was Saban's first season (2000) and LSU just dropped an embarrassing game to UAB at home. The Tigers hosted #10 Tennessee (one of the elite programs in the country). Tigers surged to a 24-6 lead, but the Vols fought back and tied it 31-31 with about 1:30 minutes to go. LSU had the ball, 2nd and 10 from about the 15. Rohan drops back...and intentionally grounds the ball under intense pressure.
So its 3rd and 21, well inside the LSU 10 yard line. We all know what events will transpire. We have read this book before. It has happened so times games the last 10 years. Avert your eyes. LSU will run a lame draw play for 3 yards (surely we won't have our injured QB who can barely walk attempt a pass from his own endzone). Tigers will punt the ball from their own 10 - off the side of the foot and will be lucky to get 25 yards off the punt. Tenn will already be in position to kick the game winning field goal, but just for good measure they will score a TD as time expires. Why would we expect anything differently?
But wait, that isn't a draw play. Rohan takes the ball from the shotgun. He drops back to his own endzone and throws a bullet to Josh Reed for 25 yards. FIRST DOWN FOR THE TIGERS! There would be no punt. No last second TD or FG for the Volunteers. No heart broken loss. Instead, LSU moves the ball until time expired and the game goes into OT. Rohan flicks his wrist on 1st down to throw a strike Robert Royal in the endzone. Tenn has their chance to answer, but it is too late. LSU football had already changed forever and Tennessee stands no chance. LSU gets their first win of the 2000's over a top 10 team - the first of many to come.
The play that changed LSU football was a 3rd and long strike from Davey to Reed from their own 5 yard line.

That's a pretty good one.
I feel like that bomb to Skyler Green vs. UGA that gave us the win kinda cemented that we had stepped into the realm of the elite.
eta: At least for me, it was the first time I thought, "We can beat anyone."

I was there that night...the play happened right in front of me. I remember it well.
BTW, you left out the part about Rohan playing virtually crippled that night.

agreed....i'd throw the onside kick to start the auburn game in there. that play propelled us to our first SECcg and the rest has been history since we upset tennesse in the georgia dome

If Rohan doesn't complete that pass to Reed again Tenn, that Auburn game doesn't mean nearly as much. And I would argue that we wouldn't have ended up quite so good in 2003 either.

I agree with the game but disagree with the play. The tipped ball in the corner of the endzone to end overtime and seal the deal as students lined the endzone is the play for me.

If you're going to argue that game changed LSU football then maybe you could argue that the Booty INT the previous week was what opened the door for Rohan to play in that game

i feel like the Tennessee game got us back to where we were at the peak of the Dinardo era. A good team that could win games like the "bring back the magic" game.
The win over UGA i think was more significant, in that it launched us to where we wanted to be -- a program in the national spotlight and in serious contention for a national title.
The sequence of events leading up the the Green TD was the first time that I remember being in Tiger Stadium against a really good opponent, and the general vibe was "we're going to pull this out, they got lucky on that long screen pass, we're better than those guys" as opposed to the "here we go again" mindset. like it was the exact moment saban talked about in all of his climbing the mountain/overcome adversity/changing the mindset speaches coming to fruition.

The Auburn onside kick was 2001. We lost to UT in regular season in 2001. That was the game where Kelly Washington whipped our DB's all night.

Tennessee was ranked 11 in 2000 ... not in the top 10. Just went back and watched the video.
