How do YOU pronounce mirliton?

Got into a discussion with the girlfriend about this last night. I know people who pronounce it "mel-it-on" and others who pronounce it "merle-it-on." In the FDB's infinite snobbery, err wisdom, I submit the question, which is correct?

Mumble it under my breath and point at the menu.
Same as I do with a Caipirinha.

The Donaldsonville country pronunciation is mel-iton. The New Orleans pronunciation is merl-iton.
I like mel-iton better because my fam is from the D ville area. Holla!

I'm NOLA born and raised, and I say mel-it-on. There goes that theory...

Interesting. My Mama and her peeps are from D'ville, and they say MERL-itAWn. They've been away from that area for a good long while so maybe they've been "corrupted" by a mixed marriage with New Orleans folk. My Daddy's Mama was from the Irish Channel, and both she and my Mama shared a lot of recipes. In truth, one or both of them alternately called them alligator pears.

I'm just going by the NOLA restaurant server pronunciation!
Had some pickled mirliton on Saturday at Sylvain. It was really good! Anytime mirliton is on the menu, I am ordering it.
It's one of those things I hated as a kid for no good reason. I just refused to eat it having never tried it. I could lump mirliton with a bunch of other foods I did not eat as a child but I love now.

My menu was already in my head when I did the dhopping yesterday, which made me a bit pissed that huge merlitons were for sale 2/$ at Mathernes.

Also called vegetable pair or chayote squash.
I like to stuff with ground meat, shrimp or crab dressing. Also pickle spears with vinegar, garlic, bay leaves and peppers.

Vegetable pears.
If pressed to do so in a restaurant...melliton.
