The feeling of losing a buck

I put up a new ladderstand in pretty good area Tuesday and put a couple of rice bran piles out. Went back yesterday evening and the deer were moving around 4:15. Shot a nice ten point with my bow, hit him kind of far back but it was a definite hit. Tracked him a ways and lost the blood trail. I really HATE the feeling of losing a nice buck. Not to mention it was my first with a bow.

Damn man. Sorry to hear that

I've had to fight vomiting before.

Sucks to hear. Hopefully he'll make it and give you another shot.
Luckily I know of a guy with a good blood dog. They are a very good tool to have.

Luckily, very luckily, I've found all of the ones I've hit.
But, I missed the very first buck I ever saw. It still bothers me every time I get in the stand, seriously.
Weapon selection, proper sighting, and patience.
I will never get on the stand without making sure I've done those three things correctly.

You should be able to find him just looking for buzzards. Shame you won't be able to enjoy the meat, but the bone will still look good.

My first bow kill wasn't a great shot. I couldn find em the night I shot and looked for hours the next morning. Had giving up and felt sick to my stomach when on the way out found blood. He was just yards from where I had stopped. Was a great relief.

Even if you hit him back he's going to die. Look for buzzards in a day or two and you'll find him. How long did you wait to track him and what did your arrow look like.
If you have dark blood on your arrow it's a liver shot. Wait a minimum of 4 hours before tracking a buck with this kind of hit.
If there is little blood on your arrow smell it. You will not mistake a gut shot deer. In this case you should wait at least 8 hours before you start tracking.
If you don't recover your arrow and feel your shot was back you're best off to treat it as a gut shot. Usually if you don't push a deer they will die within 100 yards of where you shot them. Keep your head up, if you bow hunt long enough you are going to loose one. Just learn from your experiences.

That is GOOD advice. Only thing I'd add is to be sure you've looked long enough for the deer. Some hunters give up the hunt for a wounded deer to quickly. If you didn't find deer w/ the initial search, you can also look later on; e.g. on a AM deer hunt, look again in the afternoon; on a PM deer hunt, look again the next AM.

I have lost one deer in my life and it still bothers me. I was young and got buck fever. Hit him too far back with a muzzleloader. About 10 min after I shot him, it came a frog-strangler of a storm and I lost any chance at a blod trail. He ran into the nastiest cutover you've ever seen and I couldn't find him the next morning. The following season, I was tracking another one I shot and came across the skeleton, complete with rack. THAT made me want to puke...

This is very true. Several times I've found deer after My friends have given up. Fresh eyes make a difference sometimes.
I should have added that liver and especially gut shot deer almost always head to a water source, so I'd head there and look some more.

And move downhill ASAP.

I did the same thing. Took me a couple days of watching the buzzards, but I figured it out, and atleast got the horns.

Any water close by? A gut shot alot of times will try to get into some water.

Lost a nice one last year. Looked to be a good hit,Quartering towards me, knocked him down, he got up and ran. Waited about 45 min to climb down, walked back to main trail to drop backpack and get buddy - so a little over an hour after the shot before i ever hit the woods looking for him. Strong blood trail, and it just petered out. Looked till 10pm and gave up. Came back next am and still no luck.

Yeah quartering towards you is bad shot choice. When I was a young kid I shot a nice 9 point that way and it took us forever to find him. We had given up looking and decided to walk out to a rode that was close by and walked up on him. His blood trail had quit about 150 yds from where he was found laying. Will NEVER make a shot at a deer that is quartered towards me ever again.

We said about 4 hours before starting to look. The arrow didn't pass through, he took off running with it in him still. We looked about 3 hours last night and I went back this morning and started looking again. Once he hit a clearing the trail disappears and we can't figure which way he went. Def will watch for the buzzards, horns are better than nothing.

Shot a small 8 point at 25 steps with a 30-6 150 grain quartering away from me. It ran about 50 yards and laid down. I got down after 30 min and it took off running. 3 of us searched for it and found alot of blood then it petered out. Looked til 9:30 that night, shot him at 5:30. Went out next day and still couldn't find him, went out every other day after and didn't even find buzzards. Then I found out my inlaws saw a black bear the other day, . Wander if he found the deer first.
