Is Joe Pa too damn stupid, or is his ego/pride too big for him to see that he needs to step down?

I honestly think he was in denial when he heard the story from the GA...no way his long time friend could be a pedafile in his eyes. He did what his duty by reporting it to administration and felt it would go away...which it did for about 9 yrs which baffles me. It doesn't make what he did right...just trying to make sense of what the old man did.

He remembers what happened to the Bear and doesn't want to die just yet.

It seems like the media is blowing the whole Paterno angle out of proportion.

They guy isn't The Godfather. He can't be expected to know everything that goes on at all times.

The ball was dropped by the AD. He should have called the cops as soon as he heard the story from McQueary. I'm sure Paterno assumed the higher ups would do their jobs correctly.

He's gone. He just doesn't know it yet. There is no way he will be the coach of Penn State next season, and may not last the season.

He will likely retire quietly.

Calling Sandusky his "friend" is being a little loose with the facts. Sandusky worked for him. He's no more Joe's "friend" than my secretaries or personal assistants are my "friends". They are employees and I should not be held responsible for any goofiness that they are into on their own time.

He was probably leaving at the end of the season anyways. Most of the people I know that work in intercollegiate have been saying this since spring ball and when he got hurt in camp it pushed that envelope.

The ball should have never been put in the hands of the AD. Something like this goes straight to the University President.

That's a bit strong. He did everything he was legally required to do.

Plus we don't know if he reached out to Sandusky or not. It's very possible that he personally contacted him and reprimanded him privately. Lots that we don't know.

I don't condone Paterno's actions, but I also don't think we know the whole story.

He may have walked a fine line and avoided any legal charges, but he should be held to a much higher standard.

Is there any doubt that every member of that coaching staff knew what was going on? You are talking about a group of people that spend nearly every waking moment together. I can't fathom how this was kept secret.

The head of their Board Supervisors (or whatever they call it up there) should fire the President, the AD, all of the AD staff and the entire football staff.

There may be some innocent people get hurt in doing that, but since when has Penn State cared about innocent people getting hurt.

That would send a national message that they are serious about taking control of a scandal that some people are calling the biggest to ever hit college athletics, and maybe higher education.

1) Sandusky wasn't working for Joe at the time of the 2002 incident.
2) Curley was trusted and Joe's boss. Schultz was the head of campus police. If anything Schultz should've brought in the state police.

He did exactly what was mandated. Should he have continued to follow up with authorities? He certainly could have. It's not his fault that Curley (his boss and a guy who had been AD for 9 years at the time of the incident) and Schultz (head of campus police) didn't take it outside.

I watched a show on PCN last night that had attorneys here talking about it and they all thought it would be very difficult to get the charges to stick on Schultz and Curley based on how the statute is written. As for Sandusky...........he can burn in hell if he's guilty. He was one of our greatest coaches ever and he used his status to abuse children. As an alum I'm beyond sick that our university is going through this. I feel the worst for those kids.

What??? paterno's involvement is overblown?

he knew this guy hugged and fondled an 11 yr old in the psu showers in 1998 as it was admitted to by sandusky in court documents. then, he hears about sandusky raping a child in the shower in 2002 and merely reports it to the ad? give me a fricking break! paterno doesnt wonder why the rapist keeps showing up on campus? paterno continues to interact with this rapist until he's investigatedf for an incident in 2009? paterno needs to drop dead under this cloud of shame.
