Deer hunting with a .44 magnum

I'm thinking about getting a handi-rifle in .44 mag for "primitive" deer season and hunting out of a climbing stand. Pops has a .45-70 that works well, but I can't stand shooting that hard kicking bastard.

I was also thinking the .44 would be something good to keep for chirrins to shoot in the future. I know a few of you people on here have experience shooting deer with it.

Anybody had some un-satisfying results with them? I was thinking the .500 S&W would be cool until I saw the ammo prices

A good friend of mine has a buddy who deer hunts with a .44 mag S&W revolver

He asked him why and the response was "because I can"

Took my first few deer with a tiger 44mag carbine. I still have that gun. It is a great gun to shoot

I wish a lever action could be used for primative weapon. I would love to have a 45LC or 44mag lever rifle.

I have taken several with a .41 mag all under 60 yards.

None went very far - shot placement

I have a Taurus .44 mag pistol that I hunt with on occasion. I have shot at and killed 1 deer with it (5 point on WMA).

Would be a good brush gun/pistol...

Keep your distances reasonable, and you'll never know the difference other than the relief from the heavy recoil. If I had any interest in primitive season, this is what I would do.

I would have a lot less trouble convincing myself I need a lever action .44 mag then a single shot .44 mag

Anybody have ideas for bullet selection? I'm thinking hard about trading my .25-06 for one.

re: Deer hunting with a .44 magnum

Just something I found.

quote:

A myriad of loads from many ammo manufacturers suit the .44 Magnum for any big-game hunting. A 240-grain bullet at about 1,180 fps is standard. Hornady advertises a 240 JHP at 1,350 and a 300 JHP at 1,150--as well as a 200-grain JHP at 1,500. Perhaps the best load for hunting is the Hornady 225 FlexTip bullet at 1,410 fps. At 100 yards it still clocks over 1,100.

I was thinking either the flex tip or some buffalo bore shite. Guess I'll worry about that after I decide if I'm actually willing to part with my tikka for a gun that I will only use 4 or 5 times a year.

I just looked at it online. Pretty sweet. They have a bunch of youtube videos if you search "H&R 44"

I just bought one about a month ago for the same reason. I can use it for primative season and my son can shoot it one day. Good idea bro!

re: Deer hunting with a .44 magnum

The ONLY thing concerning me is that I can also get a SxS .410 for the same price/trade, and I'm having a very hard time deciding which one I want more

If I don't get the Henry, I'm getting a Marlin lever action .410.

Did you get my camera? I may get to sneak down there for a few minutes this weekend. I'd like to go ride the new area and check it out.

Fixed cylinder choke (no choke). If it wasn't for that I'd have one already.

No I never made it to that end of the world.

re: Deer hunting with a .44 magnum

I bought an H&R 44 last year and love it. I've killed one deer and my son killed one with it. I shoot the Winchester 240 grain jacketed soft points and find they work well. I may try the hornadays when I run out.

I killed mine at 140 yds with a clean pass thru.

Eta: I'm headed to the camp right now. Hopefully I'll have some more reports by Saturday.

It really is a sweet little gun. I use it anytime my shots will be under 100 yards.
