I wernt to Tuscaloosa on Amtrak in late 80's. It was very reasonable and enjoyable. Short cab ride to campus.

I drove to Dallas with a few friends for the Oregon game. One or two were talking about how they traveled to Atlanta by train and how great it was. Cheaper than gas money, get to bring your own drinks, and even had a sleeper car. Dude got to pass out and wake up in Atlanta.

After driving 8 hours each way for the Dallas game I think I'm only traveling by train ever again.

IF you take a train get your own private car and spend the extra money. I traveled from Memphis to Hammond in coach and it was rough. Food is bad and overpriced and no room there for an ice chest. Train ran pretty late because of having to wait on freight trains who they said basically have right of way( or atleast that was the reason they gave)

Don't expect to have nice dining experiences in the dining car.
Don't expect to be surrounded by dignitaries.

But it can be fun.

Usually take my RV or go by car but this year we are going by Amtrak. We rented a private car for 60 people which is full and have a waiting list. I know a number of people that have done this and strongly recommended it.

A train trip sounds like it'd be a blast as far as I'm concerned.

Passenger trains are slow but easy. You don't have to worry about parking, just cab it or get into one of the organized shuttles. Or see if your hotel has one.

Trains all have power outlets so you can charge your phone etc. Use to take them often when I lived in the NE. It's nice not having to drive.
