I think it is over rated. Tried it three times just on the off chance they were having a bad day. Wasn't that great. A lot of people are mislead by the whole james beard award thing. The award wasn't for the chicken it was for being around so long or something like that. I thnk jaque I mos has better fried chicken. Popeyes is better to me as well but only certain locations and only when they are busy.
the absolute best fried chicken I have ever had was in new york city at Momofuko noodle bar. Phenomenal chicken.

The James Beard Award was for the chicken. That said, I believe its good but not great. I do think she has (and she is the granddaughter now) a top three red beans and rice.
Jacque Imo's fried chicken is the old Austin Leslie recipe which is where he cooked before he died. Pampo's is where he was for a long time and it's the same. And yes...it's probably in my opinion, the best.
Willie Mae's is worth the trip because it's very good. Great no. Good yes and as I said get the red beans with it.
I eat there from time to time. If I can get in a get seated within a few minutes I'll stop. If it's half hour or so wait (which at times it is) I just pass because there are other good options.

Austin Leslie's chicken (at Jacques Imo's) is awesome-ness. He actually left there and went to Pampy's and tragically died after Katrina. Some Bum bought Pampy's after the storm and re-named it "Chef Austin's Creole Kitchen" ... hired the last chef that Leslie trained to run it.
The guy disgraced Chef Austin's name. Went out of business within a year or two.
Best fried chicken and bell peppers ever.
With that being said, Willie Mae's is overated IMHO. I'd rather go to a crack head corner store lke Manchu on the corner of Esplanade and Claiborne. (Theirs is pretty good by the way.)

well excuse me for not following the trend here but it's the best fried chicken in town Lester. I went last week. Fiorellas in the qtr use to give WM's a run and it's still very good but not like before Katrina
plus the sides are perfect at Willie Maes

the people on yelp seem to think it is pretty great too. Im getting a late start though, im guessing there may be a wait by the time i get there
Posted on 5/6/11 at 11:53 am to Lester Earl
I always go around 1p, never had to wait more than 5 minutes

He did but he was returning to Pampys. He was there before Jacque Imos then went back. He was somewhere else before that but I don't remember.
And for those above, by all means go eat it. I said it was good. Not great but good. Only great fried chicken though is my mothers so I'm a little biased.

I like the chicken at McKenzie's, Two Sisters and Jaque-Imo's better, but its still some pretty good chicken

The $3 "upcharge" for white meat chicken is a particularly classy move on the part of Willie Mae's.
They serve good fried chicken - and 50 other places in the metro area do the same.

Going to Willie Mae's later is a better option, less of a wait. And they are going to be expanding hours soon.
Dooky's to my taste is better than Willie Mae's. But there is something really intriguing about WM's batter.

From what I recall, I ate run of the mill green beans and butter beans.

You have to eat the red beans. It's all I get.
Dooky Chase I eat the gumbo.

then u ordered the wrong sides. Who eats at a NOLA restaurant and doesn't get the red beans and the cajun rice as a side?

I prefer McHardy's on Broad.

Right here, dude. But I don't eat fried chicken much anyway.
By the way, what defines "a NOLA restaurant"?

a NOLA restaurant"?
a fried chicken joint in the hood that has been around for 60 years would qualify I would think.
Green beans don't really have that NOLA feel is all I am saying. It would be like going to Florida and asking for grape juice instead of fresh squeezed orange juice from the grove next to the restaurant. Whatever city I go to I try to experience the local things. Red Beans and cajun rice are rather "local" to New Orleans I would think

Dude, I'm freaking from New Orleans! So I don't exactly feel the need to have that stuff ad nauseum.
If Willie Mae's is so awesome like all of us read in advance - to me, the green beans should have been major arse-kickers.
Nothing wrong with the place - but nothing I'd ever think about for a return visit - especially in a city with so many options.
