Galatoire's Review (long) - Friday lunch

Since we've heard going to a Friday lunch at Galatoire's was a must, we gave it a shot last week...
Got there by 10:30 as was recommended, and the couple in front of us said that they would be the last ones seated in the first lunch sitting, so we wouldn't get to eat until closer to 1:30pm. It was the fiancee's birthday so we were going to wait, no matter what...it turns out this worked out better than we thought it would. While we waited, John Besh was filming a segment for "The Best Thing I Ever Ate" inside, and said hello to everyone...
At 11:00, Maitre D' said we could go upstairs for drinks while we waited, and that it would clear out after 11:30 when everyone got seated. Drinks at the bar included mimosas, sazerac for me, milk punch for her...
We got seated a little before 1:00 in the downstairs room (thankfully)...you guys told us to trust our waiter and it was good advice...never caught a glimpse of a menu
Waiter asked if we wanted to start with Souffle Potatoes, we said yes...they were unique, light and airy (ETA: and went GREAT with the bernaise sauce)
Waiter next asked if we wanted the seafood appetizer with oysters, crawfish, shrimp and crabmeat. Again we said yes, and got a bottle of white wine. The plate was full of oysters en brochette, which melted in your mouth...shrimp remoulade which had a nice horseradish kick...good crabmeat and a large lump of crawfish remoulade...I thought this thing would've cost $30 or more, ended up being $18...by this point we got full quickly...
For entree, waiter recommended grilled pompano or snapper...we chose to split the pompano since we were getting stuffed, which was a wise decision. Fish was light and flaky, only complaint is it could've used a little less salt & more pepper. We also got Potatoes au gratin and spinach au gratin...both were delicious.
Bill turned out to be about $160, which was a pleasant surprise, since our wine was $50 of that.
Waiting at the bar upstairs was perfect, since we got to prolong the day.
We walked out around 4:00pm and finished things off at the Sazerac Bar inside the Roosevelt...

Did you happen to hear what he was recommending from Galatoire's?

Glad you had a good experience. You did everything right other than to get full too quickly.
How about copying and pasting your review in geaux.com dining guide so someone else in your position will benefit from your experience?

Our guess is that it was a potato themed show and they were doing the pommes souffle with the bernaise sauce....

Never been before. Can you make reservations? Or do you really have to get there at 10.30?

$110 for lunch and you split an entree?
There has to be something you left out right?
I dont recall Galatoires being that expensive.

You can make reservations to eat upstairs, but otherwise, on a busy day like Fridays, it's best to arrive early. On other days of the week, you might be fine. If you're a regular, you can get a reservation downstairs through your regular waiter. I know a lot of folks who do that.

Ok. So Im guessing it is much better to eat downstairs as opposed to up? The wife and I's anniversery is Saturday and this thread gave me a good idea.

Yes. For a special occasion, downstairs is the place to be. Make a day of it. I don't know that you have to be there, that early, on a Saturday, but maybe some other folks will chime in who know better. I've been several times on a Saturday and arrived at 11 or 11:30, with no problem eating downstairs. If you know anyone who has a connection, there, they may be able to make a reservation for you. Also, it doesn't hurt to call and ask. You might get someone who decides to let you have a reservation for the special occasion because they know it's not a busy day!
It's a great place for a celebration!

Sorry I wasn't clear. Aniversery is Saturday but I plan to take her Friday and make a day of it since I hear Friday is the best time to go. I will plan to get there around 10.30 like the OP suggested. However, getting there and drinking for a couple hours prior to being seated wouldn't be a bad idea. I would actually rather that.

Looks about right to me, with the cocktails, tax and tip.
Posted on 3/21/11 at 11:58 am to Gris Gris
With cocktails yes.. When I read his review I saw 160 with 50 including all drinks. 110 for 1 entree and 1 appetizer plus tax and tip for lunch would be absurd.

I agree. I had to go back and look for the cocktails when you brought it up because I couldn't figure it out, either. The food prices are actually quite reasonable.
