And here's why...

As a newish soccer fan (basically I've been following to the best of my ability for the last 2 seasons), the first team I latched onto was Manchester United.

I've figured something out...it's not rewarding to follow a club that is so damned good.

So, I've decided to switch allegiances. I want to suffer a bit, know what the pain of a soccer fan is. I have a soft spot for United I suppose...but it's not fun to root for them.

Here are the criteria:

1. The new squad will not be one of the big 4 (excludes Pool, Chelski, and Arsenal...again, it's too easy to latch onto said clubs)

2. This club will not be Citeh. This elminates a fourth of the current EPL off top.

3. Englush clubs outside of the Premier League are not excluded from my search for a new club. Except for...

4. Leeds. frick them.

5. Some semblance of a history and tradition are a must. It gives me something to research and learn about my new team.

So Soccer Board...I'm asking for your help in guiding me to a new club.

here's where you're wrong on excluding Liverpool. They're not a top 4 team pure and simple. In 'aura' and 'people's minds' they are, but at football? They aren't. Not even that close to be honest.

Let me sum up being a Liverpool fan at this current juncture to see if it's something you might enjoy.

Right now, we suck. Manager is shite, our moody world class striker looks like he's more suited for league two at this point, and we have some midfielders who could be overrun in a 12 yr old's 5 a side game. We don't play attractive football (Manager) so every game isn't pleasing to the eye and you feel like it's going to keep getting worse.

BUT...

Having said that. It's Liverpool. 2 years ago we finished 2nd in the Leauge with a record point total for a team in that position. Slaughtered Real Madrid 5-0 on aggregate in the Champs league. and took United apart 4-1 at Old Trafford. In the same week. We have 5 european cup titles in our history, and while those are done and dusted, those are always there when it comes to motivation, and arguments.

Getting back to the days where Liverpool was LIVERPOOL, is going to be a long journey from this point forward. It's a bit of a mess right now, but it's not so far as say Leeds. The journey from here on out is what's going to make the ultimate rewards that much sweeter. Because believe me, there's gonna be lows. shite, on Wed against Blackburn you can almost bet on there being another 'low'.

So by picking Liverpool, you're not joining a team that will win every week and not be challenged by lesser teams, you'll be watching a mid table team. And that's exactly what we are right now. We're Bolton. Some good performances, some bad.

And honestly, that's why you should be so excited to become a Liverpool fan. You're going to come on and watch as Liverpool emerges from the Hicks/Gilette/Hodgson coma, and returns to the kings of Europe. You get to watch a whip smart owner and front office as they transform Liverpool as a brand and a football team. You're going to see so much young talent come in that's not overpaid but are rather cheap, because they've been undervalued elsewhere...And at the end of this road, you get to watch Liverpool hoist the PL trophy again at some point and most likely the Eurpopean Cup for the 6th time (because let's face it, when we're in Europe, we're always the team to beat).

When you get to that point, you'll find that the journey wasn't shallow. It's not like supporting Man City now and all this shite happens within a year because money flows out of their sink faucets there. No, this one will have to be earned. Miserable mornings spent watching Hodgson dry hump his way to losses against bottom table teams. Message board chats about "are we really a threat to get relegated?".

Right now the closest thing I can approximate the experience of being a Liverpool fan to, or at least how I see what's going to happen- is from Shawshank redemption: "...who crawled through a river of shite and came out clean on the other side."

It sucks now, but man it's gonna be fun to be a Liverpool fan when we emerge again.

So, as you can see. Liverpool isn't a 'top 4' team. There is no bandwagon to jump on here.

There's just tens of thousand of militant supporters who sing their brains off and support their team (not the current manager though).

You'll never walk alone, sung by the Anfield faithful

Just a great video for Liverpool

Actually, I've mispoken. I keep saying 'choosing' Liverpool and I got that wrong. Liverpool chooses you. It got me when I never thought I'd give a shite about any of the teams.

So hopefully, Liverpool is the team you're looking for and maybe one of those videos is what grabs you. We'd love to have you aboard. YNWA

Damn. I'm almost ready to switch to 'Pool after reading that. Good stuff.

Anything has to be better than picking Tottenham (aka Spuds;aka Scum). I'm afraid that's who the guy will end up picking.

Well aren't you confident. That is a very rosy picture you paint. Where will you find this new incarnation of SAF, a perfect owner, and overabundance of european talent that no one else has picked up on?

OP, what about QPR or notingham? West ham is another option.

Birmingham City

They do have some rabid fans and a pretty cool stadium for a PL club. I like that the fans are so close to the pitch.
