This is really my only option since the school I will be attending does not accept federal financial aid. (Yes it is accredited and everything)

I'm guessing they have national accreditation and not regional.

What does the school teach--how to perform EEG's and Nerve Conduction Studies? Maybe try to talk to a neurology group and see if they will pay for your school if you agree to work for them for x number of years.

High rates are the main cons.

You may want to check the demand of the job. I know these tests are run by physiatrists at my group.

I'm not sure BUT I want to say that all student loans are handled through the government ... it was part of the healthcare bill.

I seem to remember being told that if needed we wouldn't be able to get a student loan through anyone but the government.

I wouldn't doubt it since people make all kinds of stuff up, but it's not true. Federally-backed loans have been changed to being done directly from the government, vs. giving banks a cut of the action. Other loans are still available.

Correct. An absurdly naked free handout was taken away from "private lenders". That is all.

SO if/when my son needs a loan, he/we can march into our local bank? This does make me feel better ... I really didn't think that we could do this.

Are you being serious? Your local bank can make you whatever kind of loan they want to. Now, I can't guarantee you they will WANT to do so. But had you really convinced yourself we were in the midst of some kind of govt takeover?

Let's see: Chrysler, General Motors, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, the entire mortgage industry, power to take over hedge funds and insurance companies which might do systemic harm, Citibank, AIG, private health insurance....why would anyone think the government might be trying to take over anything???

I've gotten 2 loans in my 41 years of life ... 1 for a house and 2 for vehicles (we've owned like 6).

I really hadn't convinced myself of anything ... he's got scholarships and won't need that much help ... I've never even looked into loans ... just asking about what I had heard.

So please don't make fun of my asking a question.

I'm not. I'm just trying to gauge the level of fear out there right now.

And in any of that, what attempts were made to prevent banks from lending? Take mortgages - the government would love nothing more than for a private mortgage market to re-emerge.

Well thanks ... I was truly under the impression that ALL student loans were going to go through the government.

IF we ever needed to my plan was just gonna take out a home equity loan.

I'm not FEARFUL of this ... just fearful of government take over in general! I want lower taxes, less governnment involvement in my life.

Thanks.
