Earlier today, Wladimir Klitschko brutally KO'd top 5-ranked Eddie Chambers in the 12th round to retain the world heavyweight championship. To show you how far HW boxing has fallen, the championship fight was not shown in the U.S. by any major network.

Here are the highlights of the fight with the KO at the 7:50 minute mark: LINK

Happened with less than 15 seconds left in the fight. I dont think he wanted it over so bad that he decided to fall face-first to the canvas and laid motionless for almost a minute with less than 15 secs left.

I agree, the punch didnt look like it hit him perfect. But I guess it may not take a flush punch from a 6'6", 240lbs HW champion to knock someone out.

Germany is huge in terms of boxing popularity. The Klitschkos bring 50,000 in attendance routinely when they fight there. To put in perspective, the Manny-Clottey fight this past weekend in Texas pulled in just over 50,000 people and it ranks either first or second (I forget) in the total attendance in U.S. boxing history.

Current middleweight champion Arthur Abraham often brings in 40K in Germany and, in the 90s, German middleweight champion Dariusz Michalczewski was even more popular than AA.

Ever since Max Schmeling KOd Joe Louis in the 1930s, Germany gets pretty fanatic whenever a German or Eastern European fighter domintates his division.

I'd say the lack of interest in the Klitschkos has some to do w/ the fact that they're not American but much more to do w/ the fact that they have no viable opponents to challenge them. That, and they use a boring but effective boxing style. Who the hell wants to watch a Klitschko brother dominate one unworthy fighter after the next w/ jabs and defense? Valuev is a worthless freak show and Haye is just another no-talent Don King mirage.

They'd generate some interest if those selfish assholes would just frickin fight each other already instead of hogging the belts and fighting tomato cans like Rahman and Chambers.

im just not that impressed bc it was in the 12th and final round.. i dunno.. but i do believe the klitschko brothers are great..

just never been a fan of chambers. you know the heavyweight division is weak when a guy like chambers in ranked 3rd i believe.. he just doesn't look nearly as impressive as the heavyweights of the past few decades..

Agreed. Style and lack of challengers being the biggest reasons. If a foreign born HW fighter would come out banging and dominating like an 80's Tyson, the American public would pay attention,IMO.

Ive said for the longest time that Emmanual Steward single handedly killed the HW division when he developed the "stand up straight, jab, jab, straight right, hold" style late in Lennox Lewis' career. That style killed off any chance the smaller heavyweights had (the HWs the same size of Tyson and Holyfield who were quicker and more athletic) and turned the division strictly into a size/reach wins division.

Couldn't a HW the talent of a Tyson or Holyfield in their prime get inside of that? Hell Ali could fight with the style you are describing when he had to, and he was incredible. That being said Ali's jab in his prime was ridiculous.

Thats why the style is effective (and boring), it completely wipes out inside fighting. Tyson or Holyfield may have been able to get on the inside, but they would have been tied up IMMEDIATELY. Tysons combinations on the inside were brutal and he won the majority of his fights that way (he made the right hook to the body, right uppercut combo famous). In todays division, he wouldnt have been able to throw more than one punch on the inside before getting tied up, IMO.

Until the refs start deducting points for excessive holding, I dont see it changing anytime.

Yeah, but I wouldn't have to hear it from my family every Christmas if i whipped your arse....but i would if I embarrassed my brother on national tv; especially if i were already rich and didn't need the money.
