WOW! First English Bible was printed by CONGRESS

Unbelievable. And guess what...it was an approved edition, for the purpose of teaching in the SCHOOLS.

Beck had one of only 22 left, out of the 10,000 originally published.

If this nation loses it's religion, instead of building upon it, and gives power to a secular government (men)...we are toast! Might be already. IMHO

Don't watch the program, but I'm pretty sure the first bibles printed and published in English were in sixteenth century England.

I see you are watching Beck as well. I think inside of all of the talk on his show today there is some truth. It is important that we as Americans understand that we do have inalienable rights as human beings. If we do not understand that these rights are ours as humans, we will not fight those who try to take them from us. "Give me liberty or give me death."

re: WOW! First English Bible was printed by CONGRESS

Guess what I meant Tom, is that if we value secular government over religion, to inspire and codify the social contract which binds a people together, then I suspect that the secular version (of government) will fail.

Reading a book, written by a dude named J. Althusius, way way back. One of the first on politics. The man believed that it was the job of government, to make damn sure, that religion was not perverted, or misused.

Building upon religion, or employing the ideology of Jesus, as a basis for government, is not impossible. In fact, Jesus' principle for receiving mercy (charity), was not without the caveat of QUALIFIERS.

Does ANYBODY out there, believe that CIVIC RESPONSIBILITY, should not be taught - even MANDATED - in public education, if the government is going to wily-nily become the 'father' (means of support) in so many current scenarios. Can we just make an end run on Nature, and subsidize just anybody...heathen or responsible citizen or not?

Good grief...this whole secular Socialist/Utopian government blueprint...is a joke. Even a redneck from Hillsdale, can see that.

Doesn't that assume we measure secular government and religion on the same scale? (and isn't that a poor assumption?)

yet you seem to believe whatever crap Beck spews, so obviously you're perception is pretty, well, skewed.

A secular government would likely do better without a delusional populace.

And maybe Beck meant that it was the first Bible printed in America. I didn't read that Tyndale link.

Really not the point. The point is that the FF's obviously realized the critical aspect being that without a God/Jesus-based morality, in the PEOPLE, the freedoms in the Constitution would only lead to societal collapse. Hard to argue that, observing the empirical evidence.

would also be a lie
http://www.loc.gov/exhibits/treasures/trm036.html

Maybe he was referring to this?
quote:

On January 21, 1781, Robert Aitken petitioned the Unites States Congress to authorize, and if possible even fund, the printing of a complete Bible in the English language of the King James Version. On September 10, 1782, Aitken received authorization from the United States Congress to commence his American printing of the Bible in English. This is the only instance in history of the U.S. Congress authorizing the printing of a Bible. In subsequent years, that session was often mockingly referred to as “The Bible Congress.” Thus, in 1782, Robert Aitken produced the first English language Bible printed in America. In 1783, George Washington wrote a letter commending Robert Aitken for his Bible. The Robert Aitken Bible is known as the “Bible of the American Revolution” and it remains the most rare and valuable of early American English Bibles.

even then, it wasn't for education.

The ignorance of the OP is astounding (first English Bible? WTF?). Governments have and will continue to function quite nicely without being Christian in nature, thank you.
For his part, Christ's justice was divine, not human.

LINK

When you mix the two, you can have problems. And besides, which Christianity will choose?
LINK

Many esteemed Christians, like Dante and St Thomas Aquinas (and even St Augustine, to a certain extent) quite wisely understood that good government is not limited to Christians -- all it takes is the use of natural reason -- and as such it is available to a people of any religious persuasion.

On the other hand, I agree that the far left assault on western religion is bad.

You said we value secular governmetn over religion.

That assumes we value secular government on the same scale as religion.

I don't think that's a good assumption.

I see where you are going with this. The rights endowed to us by our creator (or by the cosmos depending on your religious beliefs) are not black and white. However, I feel we can all agree on some basic human rights. Many of these are covered in the constitution (which were rehashed from various other documents including the Bible).
