First off, I would like to say I'm indifferent to the BCS.

1) Small schools would still be at a disadvantage(Just like the BCS) because they will likely have to go undefeated just to have a chance to get the 7th or 8th seed

2) There will almost always be 5 or 6 with identical records teams vying for the last 2 spots, so someone will always feel jobbed, just like the BCS

I don't really care either but now a small school can go undefeated and not have a chance to play for a championship. At least with a playoff, they can compete for one.

+1

No matter what, there will always be a controversy. There will always be a deserving team left out. And there will also be times when a playoff gives a less-deserving team a shot it shouldnt have against an undefeated or 1-loss team.

3) because if they break up the BCS by claiming it unlawfully reduces competition (as Orrin Hatch claims), they also won't be able to restrict the number of teams per conference in the playoffs... which means a lot of years with 3/8 SEC teams.

Well, the same applies to the basketball tournament. Every year there is debate (and rightly so) about X team getting in over Y, and there are 65 teams in that field. (34 spots available at-large)

You just have to arbitrarily draw a line and deal with for a football playoff.

Need a +1.

Yes there will still be controversy but not nearly as much as there is now.

Baytiger, theoretically, there could be a repeat of the SECCG in the first round of the playoffs?

I like the idea of a 4 team playoff, better.

It'd be something to try and go to all those games if it were an 8 teamer.

In basketball, there is little sympathy for a team that cant make the 65 team cut. The controversy lasts for about one evening. A bubble team will almost never advance far into the NCAA tourney anyway. In football, a 2-loss team is likely a very good team that could very well knock off an undefeated. However, it probably does not deserve the chance to do so.

Why replace one controversial system with another?

Three bowl play-off, 4 teams, take two weeks, three if you wanted to extend the hype. If you ain't in the top 4 to bad. Rotate the three bowls like they do now. WTF, whats the problem.

I would rather the controversy be over who the 8th team is rather than who is number 2. The chance of identifying the best team would be better with eight teamm.

Most my friends disagree with me because I bring your second point up. The more teams you open it up to the greater the controversy. Instead of 1 team getting shafted you will have 16 2 loss teams that think they deserve a spot.

wrong.

What is needed is eight conferences of twelve teams apiece. 16 divisional winners, 8 champions, 8-team playoff. thus, you might say a 16-team playoff. When you think about it....do we really need more than 96 teams playing BCS football?

Screw the Cindarella stories...give me the best 8 teams, or your best guess at the best 8 teams...if you are a small school, you probably won't have a claim to the top 8, unless you have a killer schedule and you do well...this is how it should be.

how is that different than today? teams are jobbed in college basketball, and college baseball. we will have 8 teams...so much better than 2.

Well, the obvious answer is because it is much less controversial, and you would have much fewer cases where a team left out would have a legitimate claim to being the best team in the nation.

Pointing out that there would be some controversy doesn't do anything to show that an 8 team playoff is not a superior way to crown a champion.

An 8 team playoff would be better than what we have now; but it pales in comparison to the Qualifications Based Playoff.

Hatch and the Senate need to butt out. Those thugs are going to fix health care and energy the way they did the postal service. Which means we get screwed again.
I liked to see a BCS play off with 16 to 20 teams. All major conferences should have 12 or 14 teams with two divisions and a playoff for a conference champion.
The Conference championship games are played first Friday, Saturday and Sunday of December to accommodate TV.
( if you want can add up to four at large teams, they play the four lowest ranked teams who are in the play offs on second friday and saturday of December. That adds up to 20 teams in playoffs.)
Third weekend of December start 16 team playoff. Champion crowned second week of January. We are already playing in January.
For those who want more games, we could keep the lesser bowl games during the week like we do now but not on a week-end. It could be made a payoff like the NIT. Should probably finish before the end of December.
This works well on paper. What are your thoughts.

what are these 8 conferences you speak of? assumming the PAC10 adds 2 teams(wont happen without WW3), BIG11 adds whomever, even out the big east(with who?)-- just who in gods name is going to make the other 2 conferences? the sun belt? the WAC? the MAC? are we sure the MAC champ is more deserving than a division runner up in the SEC or BIGXII?

everyone bitches right now about the big east getting an auto-berth into the BCS-- and they will be 100 times better than the best sunbelt team

and please dont come in here with conference realignment, the SEC would never divide in half, to subsidize some sunbelt teams
