With that 44, have you had all shots equal either dropped in tracks or complete pass through for easy blood trailing?

Any lost animals?

Savage Model 11 Trophy Hunter XP - Youth. One of the "package series". Comes with a Nikon starter scope. 20" barrel, and length of pull is similar to other youth rifles (probably about 12"). With the Accutriger.

I've become a big fan of Savage recently. If I were buying my girls guns now, I think I'd get the Savages. Really like the accutriggers and the Package with the Nikon scopes are a great deal.

My son's first gun was a Ruger 44 & FIL sawed the stock off to fit him. It was hell for me to sight in being that short. All said & done he kilt several deer with it & only one long tracking job due to a gut shot

Looks like you have plenty to ocher on here BP. My only other suggestion would be to let them practice with the gun too get used to it. From what I have seen of your posts though I believe you have that we'll covered

I'm worried about kick. I dont want to scare them away from good shooting.

7mm-08 with reduced recoil will kick less than a .243 with a lot more knock down power.

Anyone have experience with the Rossi 243/20 ?
No personal experience w/ it. From reading on the 'net, results seem to be either hit or miss. One of my friends (who's an accomplished shooter and handloader) has one; he gave up on over getting it to shoot better than 2" groups at 100 yds. He'll prolly get more lifetime use w/ a bolt action than the Rossi.

When my son started hunting at 10 y/o I bought him a full size Savage bolt action (308 Win) package gun w/ regular stock. Started out w/ reduced recoil loads that I handloaded. He's done fine w/ this gun. Whatever you buy, use reduced recoil loads. At the bench, consider a sandbag between shoulder and butt of gun and use both plugs and muffs. A reduced recoil 308 Win actually recoils less than a full power 243 Win.

44-all shots were drt, but I tend to ruin shoulder roasts on the reg.

eta: A scoped bolt action in a rifle caliber he can handle is a better choice. I only bought one for PW season.

7mm-08 is your best option here. Plenty knock down power with little recoil.

This is a nice gun he will be able to use for years.

300 WSM and 325 WSM in a 6lb 7oz rifle……that should have plenty of kick!

Brother had a rossi .243 that couldnt hit the side of a house.
My suggestion is a rem 700 in 7mm08 with a stock that fits. He'll never need another rifle unless he just wants one.

Got the boy a Savage Model 11 Youth in 7mm-08 with a entry level Nikon with BDC reticle for 567 out the door.

Decided detachable mag, top visible safety, and 7mm-08 were mandatory.

Looked at mossberg, ruger Hawkeye, ruger american, marlin, mind weatherby youth models but. None met all of the above.

Looked at savage and browning bolt micro and liked both a lot. Price difference and owning two other savages swayed my decision.

I am sure it was well received! Can you get a larger stock for it later? Let us know how it goes.
