First off, let me start by saying this is my favorite type of duck. To see fly, to work, and to shoot...

In theory, I'd like to get a pretty "hen" or September teal season bird, this one, and a nice late season full plumage one mounted together to show the molting/color change throughout the season. Then my buddy reminded me that's about $1000 dollars worth of ducks... Therein lies the problem. Should I mount this one or wait for a beautiful full plumage one in case I only get one mounted and give up on creating the set.

Anyway, I killed this bird Sunday morning and he's wrapped up securely in the fridge. I got to decide what to do by the time I get of work this afternoon. Mount him or clean him. Some may find him ugly because he's just starting to change, but in my opinion, he's a fine specimen.

This tells you everything you need to know. If it makes you feel a certain way, mount it (that sounded better in my head )

Do what makes you happy. If you would regret not mounting him, by all means, do it. It's not like you have to mount all 3 at one time... you can do it at your own pace.

If I'm reading this correctly, you want 2 teal mounted. That's only about $500, not $1,000!

Be original....do what you want. Sounds like a cool idea. Mounts last a very long time. Mount that one now and wait a few years for the next one if you need to.

I've been working on adding ducks to a dead type mount for a very long time now.

Wait a little while longer for a full plumage, although they're not real easy to come by down he re.

If it was me, this. They are awesome looking birds in full plume and you can usually catch them like this in January as they come back through.

I think your original idea is awesome and I would def do it. Keep him and set out after the other two. When you get all three back mounted together you will be very pleased

3 including a hen or early season bird when they all look the same.

I think my hang up is getting the first one of the set mounted. As others have said, I understand it could take years to complete as I've only killed a handful of full plumage ones in my life...

This is what I want, with the pictured bird above being the "eclipse drake".

Wait and shoot another, later on in the season. Just got my teal mount back recently

ETA it too me a few years to kill the right blue wing. Shot that one in Venice in January.

That is an awesome mount. I am going to do one exactly like that. I have the Bluewing already done. I have a Greenwing in the freezer. Waiting on a Cinnamon to make the trifecta. Missed a chance at one last year.

My vote would be to wait for that full plumage bird, do him first. BTW you can stick that bird in a pantyhose and freeze and he'll be fine.

eta.....this mount is about 10 years old and yes if I had it to do over I'd have wings spread in flight.

Does that greenwing really have that much blue on it or is it just the iridescence being caught at the right angle?

Nice mount btw

If you're having to question it, sounds to me like you'd regret not doing it. Mount it.

Damn, that is a fine mount! Birdman does amazing work. How much total did that cost to ship and all if you don't mind me asking?

I really want to get 6 teal mounted together one day. Flipping, sideways, etc just like they come buzzing in.

Dave Luke in Breaux Bridge has a big piece of petrified tree branch with long skinny pieces jutting out in all directions and has every teal from across the world on it. Truly a magical mount.
