Got invited to go bow hunting on an amazing block of land tomorrow. However all the stands are lockons. I do not have a harness because I bow hunt from ground blinds. Is it with the risk to hunt without one? I'm 6'5 and about 285 lbs so being 25 ft in a tree makes me a little nervous

No, I did that when I was younger. I would climb my tree lounge 25-30 ft up a tree. I was lucky. I wouldn't get 10 ft off the ground without a safety harness now.

No, go buy a cheap stand at Walmart and use the cheap harness that comes with it. Then return stand if you don't want it.

Why wouldn't you - at 25ft you would be lucky to survive a fall let alone ever walk again.

Im really surprised more guys don't use them. I use to hunt climbers when I was younger. I had a friend who fell out of a lock on and broke his back. Since that day and now that I have two boys at home it doesn't seem worth it.

I do, but don't like it. You can get a harness for pretty cheap at Wally World or Academy

I hate a damn harness, but rather be safe than sorry. Seen enough people fall out of stand in my life, it aint worth it bud. Just go buy it for the peace of mind.

I don't go up any tree, lock-on or climber, without one. I love hunting and plan to do plenty of it for the rest of my life. Its just too simple of a thing to wear/use. I really don't even notice the thing on my body. HSS products are worth every penny.

I have my lock-ons rigged up with a 5/8" rope that's tied onto the tree at the base and above the stand. On that I have 3/8" rope slider in the prusik knot configuration. Slide the knot as I climb the sticks. When I get in the actual stand I connect to a big strap around the tree. protected from the ground to the stand and back down. Its a no brainer.

I see you are in NELA - I am working on my duck blind / camp tomorrow...and doing work related stuff - you are more than welcome to borrow my harness for a day - I won't be able to deer hunt tomorrow.

let me know and we can meet up - I will be working and playing - Morehouse, Ouachita and Richland parishes then Lincoln. I'll start in Morehouse at 6:00am and work may way south then west.

Nope. Either use your pop up at the bottom of the tree or buy a harness.

Hell no.

Last year I paddled out to where my stand was. I walked into the woods, got to my stand and realized I didn't have my harness. I fashioned one out of the rope in my back pack. It really sucked because it was 5/8" rope and I had to sit on it all day. Now I put it on before I leave camp. If you put it on right, I don't even notice it's there (unless I have to piss)

After having a child, my answer is no. I work in construction and wear a harness a few times a month inspecting jobsite projects that I manage. Going home the way I left it is one of my goals each day that I wake up. My family is too important to me and I'm too important to them to risk it.

Wake up an hour early and go by your nearest Wal-Mart before the hunt to pick up a harness. My grandpa always told me, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.".
