You should not let that broke slap dick guide be a judge of texas fishing. I have a house in Baffin and have had several good trips with guys from rockport all the way to the landcut. If you want to go again try some guys like Danny gonzales Cliff Webb, Aubry Black, or if you are into fly fishing there are some good guys who split time between there and florida
Fished with Joe Mendez(sp?) a few months later and had 2 great days of fishing. But the fishing really doesn't compare to La. I will only go to Baffin to try for a trophy.

On the way home, we find out from the poor souls on that boat that Tom spent all day telling the guide what to do. When they first got to the spot, within a few mins Tom said they needed to move. Then they needed to change bait (the shrimp weren't big enough). Then they needed to chase that pile of birds over there. Then they needed to try this back channel. They said after two hours of being treated like a 9 yr old, the guide gave up and just quit talking. He would troll where Tom said to, no bites, then just shake his head. The other two were office guys, and didn't realize just how out of line this was.
This is why I could never be a guide. I take people that think they know where to fish and it is quite irritating.

I still can't get over the bum taking your food and beer. What exactly was your reaction when you saw this happening?
ETA. This thread should fall somewhere under the OB culture sticky thread.

WTF!!!!!!! I didn't see he was eating until he made a comment about how he preffered his sandwiches.
Normally we would offer anyone food and drinks. But from the start Jeremy and I knew he was just a bum. With all the things that happened that was just the icing on the cake.

Fished with a guy out of Dularge that was also an oilfield sales guy. He spent most of the day on his phone while I was stuck running the trolling motor.

I think I know who you are talking about. He played cards with us one night and still owes a buddy of mine $100.

Fished with a well-known guide out of the Venice area who refuses to buy live bait. About 4 weeks ago we pulled up to one of his honey holes and caught 2 trout in 60 minutes on plastics. A different guide pulled up 50 yards from us at the same location and loaded the boat by throwing live shrimp. Very painful to watch.

Had a guide spend half an hour on the phone with his fellow little league coach, dishing about all the drama with the parents and who's kid was gonna bat clean up. It was funny, but it didn't piss me off cause we were on the fish.

Only been on one guided trip. It was with my dad and a customer to Big Lake. Met the guide at the marina early. He launched his boat, pulled up to the pier. We loaded gear and he was idling out when I reminded him that his truck/trailer was still sitting on the boat ramp with the keys in it and the door open. Having never been there before we had talked to a few people who told us some decent areas to try around Big Lake. Yea well he never really took us around any of those areas. Pretty sure he had us fishing in the ship channel at one time. I think we picked up like 4 trout, 2 reds and a Sheepshead all day. Needless to say the first guide experience wasn't all that impressive.

This thread makes me want to not pay for a guided trip ever. I have trips like these all on my own

This thread has delivered. Reading this shite at work and I've busted out laughing a few times.

It's usually not worth it for just me, but it is if family/friends are coming in from out of town and I don't want the blame for an old fashion skunking.

I have never paid for a guided trip....but a good vendor of mine has taken me on 4 trips.
One out of Lafitte and the guide was a douche. Can't remember his name. He was talking smack at the dock before we left saying he guaranteed fish or we wouldn't have to pay. We weren't catching shite when my buddy reeled in a sheephead and the guide said "I told you we would catch fish!" We told him we aren't keeping any sheephead and he got pissy with us and said well, I didn't say what kind of fish we would catch. We eventually caught a few trout, but I guarantee you it was less than 5.
Went on another charter (forgot his name too) out of GI during summer and guide refused to use live bait. I didn't care cause I thought this guy must know what they are biting on, he's a professional. After about 3 hours of fishing and nothing in the box, we were pretty pissed. This dude was fishing hard too...he was trying to save his pride I guess. We just happened to see my buddy on the water and he had a box full of trout. All caught on live shrimp. I told the guide to pull up next to my friend so we could get some shrimp...he was pissed about it, but he did. We only had time to catch about 20 before time to go.
My wife's unlce did some charters out of Houma, so I took a few guys from work including my boss one weekend. We had a wager on who would catch the most. $20 a head and lots of pride on the line. My boss had me beat and it was time to go in, but my wife's uncle said we could try another spot...I then proceeded to pass up my boss. As soon as I did, it was time to head in. My boss is still pissed about that....and that was 10 years ago. We all caught plenty that day though.
The last two I've been on is with Capt Frank with Laid Back Charters. Good guy and had a blast both times. Caught plenty each time.
Have one scheduled for next Friday out of Dularge. Hoping it's a good trip.
ETA: TT's story is by far the best.

That is a good one. Here is one that happened years ago at Lake Fork. Buddy and me had been doing an annual pilgramage to the lake since 1990. We finally decide to hire a guide, do some night fishing and try to get a 10# fish. We pull up to a C-store to meet this guy, and I see a guy in an ancient, I mean ANCIENT Ranger with a hand painted Merc, and say get a load of this guy. My buddy replies, that is our guide. Well, off we go, and quickly learn that the guide doesn't believe in drinking beer. Reformed alcoholic. We convince him that we only want to drink a couple, so he relents. Towards sundown, we start catching some decent fish near the dam on Carolina rigs, some crankers and having a good time. After dark, we move in to more point/structure pattern, and again are laying the wood to the fish. No 10# fish, but good ones. Along about 2:00 a.m., it slows down and we move. We are easing up the lake when I step down off the back platform into about 6" of water in the boat. I ask if this is normal (didn't know what else to say) and he turns around and freaks out! He panics, starts yelling about sinking, put the wrong plug in, etc. Needless to say, we start to get this bitch up on plane, or try to, and head for the landing. We make it to the landing which was actually pretty close, and he hauls arse out to get the trailer. Get the boat up, let it drain. By this time, it is about 3:30, and he wants to call it a night. We convince him otherwise, since he advertises sundown to sunup and we proceed back out, with plug in place, and slay the a.m. bite. Have not used him again, but I will admit, before the plug incident, he was putting us on the fish.
