Because people want to appear 'sporty'.

How exactly does a posi-trac rear-end on a Plymouth work?

People want to mod them to appear unique by making them look like all the other ones.

No one wants to put in the time to fab or make anything themselves.

I'm not sure but I hate how the demand has made the prices outrageous. I'd love to have one for the camp but I can't make myself pay $3k for an old and busted piece of shite.

They're fun to drive
An affordable 4x4 with better off-road capability than trucks double the price

For the few people who use them as intended, they are superb offroad.

For the majority of owners, they want 35s and a lightbar to look cool.

They're fun as frick to ride through mud and water and off road in general.

And I can spill my beer inside while offroading and simply spray out the inside. Can't do that in a truck

I have never owned a material 'thing' I have enjoyed more. Top back any time is awesome. It's super liberating to ride with the wind all around. Knowing I could go practically anywhere I want to go. Then yeah, modding it over time is fun. I love it enough that I don't have a desire for another vehicle again. I feel like I'll just swap my parts as they break. I freaking love mine.

They are fun as ell to play in. They are cool as shite too.

But for an every day driver they suck, the last 15 years the market has driven them up to laughable prices, the break on the reg, and are usually under powered.

Jeep forums and jeep clubs are a new way for jeep nerds to fit in

For offroad ability at a pricepoint, nothing beats an old tracker/sidekick.

Ive got an xterra on 35s, an 02 Rubicon on 33s, and a 4runner on 32s.

A little 4door trackick bought for 2500 bucks, with headers and a full exhaust, a new intake, fullsuspension, and a set of 32s will outperform all of them offroad without even getting a regear.

They are just so damned light.

I have a 1975 model with 10K miles on it and yes, much tougher than a Wrangler

I had a '05 Rubicon that was a toy. Only thing I ever used it for was the 2 days a year that the weather in BR was good enough to ride with the doors and tops off but it was built to crawl through the mountains. It really is unbelievable what they are capable of with just a mild lift and 35's. I trailered that thing all over the country to go rock crawling and loved every minute of it. But be careful, I had and extra $25K in it in aftermarket parts before I sold it.
