I have an end goal of eventually buying a camp on the water somewhere. Land would be nice too, but I don't think I'll be winning the lottery anytime soon.

Some facts about my current location:

-I live close to Gonzales, and will probably be settling down here
-It looks like I'll be working in Geismer
-I'd want the camp to be within 2 hours (or less being a plus) of these locations

I'm hoping you baws can point me in the right direction. I'm not seriously looking right now, just gathering information on possible places.

Another factor, picture yourself as a 30 year old bachelor (for life), looking for his weekend getaway spot.

Do you want to fish or just a place to ride and be on the water? If fishing isn't a concern, Tickfaw is close and really nice. Prop Stop and Tin Lizzy should feed your 30 yo bachelor lifestyle.

Cocodrie/Dularge/Dulac would be your best bet. Could also look into the big lake/calcasieu area as would be close to Lake Charles for some nightlife.

Grand Isle is also an option and would offer a bar scene but I despise fishing there because of all the idiots.

I'd like to fish, but its not like I'm some champion bass fishermen. A place where I can maybe set some limb lines or ride to the lake and throw in some crab traps. Casual fishing I guess I would call my interests.

Lake verett/tickfaw/maurepas area where you want to be then. Will have plenty access to freshwater fishing and bars for trolling baits.

Buy a house on the Diversion or the Amite and live there. You will get more use than having a camp somewhere. Wait til you get married with young kids. The camp will get limited use between all the kid shite you have to do. When you get older pick up a camp somewhere away from home.

I've struggled with the GI vs Cocodrie vs Hackberry choice as I want to buy a camp one day myself

See that's the kinda advice I was looking for with this topic. Although I don't ever plan on getting suckered into marriage.

I thought houses on the Amite were pretty pricey, no?

Amite homes are much cheaper than the Diversion, but they don't have as much up side as an investment. My first home was purchased as a started/ investment home, now it is a rental. Not sure what the prices are running but we have been on the Diversion for 14 years now. We get along great with our neighbor's, you can sit out on the dock in the afternoon and have a drink and it feels like you are on vacation.

As a bachelor plenty of trim in the summer, in the bars...

I'd buy a condo at Phoenix X and hit the Florabama every weekend.

How long of a ride from your house to New Orleans.

I can be downtown New Orleans in 1 hour, 45 minutes to the MSY and 45 minutes to downtown Baton Rouge.

Just from a cursory google search, I'm shocked at how reasonable some of the homes on the Amite are. How bad is your flood insurance?

And for everyone else, I've noticed not one person has mentioned anything across the river and up towards Natchez etc. Any reason for that?
