Upper Ouachita National wildlife refuge - on the Arkansas line is remote as hell.

The most remote town with residents used to be pilottown south of Venice but hurricanes have changed that. Had to get in a boat and ride 12-15 miles south of Venice to get there. They had a store, bar, post office, and a school house at one time. Most of my older family members were born there.

By the way, they have a bunch of hogs in south pass.

Used to do it before any electronics. Compass, charts and stars.

Was high cotton back in 1992 for my first GPS.

I know that my answer isn't the right one, but one day, when youre playing around on google earth, look at that swamp behind river forest subdivision in Laplace (google Somerset st in Laplace). It's essentially the swamp between airline and lake p, between Laplace and kennuh (brah).

Most of the human traffic in that swamp obviously comes off of airline, so, when we were kids, we were entering the swamp at the back of the neighborhood, about 3 miles from airline. We'd hunt back toward the lake / spillway.

I was convinced I was walking in areas no man had never seen. While I know that's not the case, seriously, look at it on google earth. It's a BIG area w/very few roads. A time or two, we packed in as far as we could go, set up camp, and hunted the next day.

Many, many of the following were felled to budding 13 year old woodsmen back then:

Fox squirrels
Cat squirrels
Wood ducks
Big ducks (prolly 4 to 1 Woodrow's though).
Woodcocks
Crawfish
Frogs
Alligators (not many, but one or two)
One deer (w/lead shot out of a 16 gauge browning)

As a kid, it was an absolute wilderness.

No more permanent residents since Katrina. Before Katrina, they had about 20 or so residents. Mostly older people with my grandparents being two of them. The pilots still stay there and a few people have camps. School & store I think went down in the late 60's with hurricane Camille.

After going up there earlier this year on a hog hunt i would have to go with this area. Hell we went 12 miles down a dirt road to get to the camp
Very true once you hit the dirt road it takes another 45 minutes to get to my camp back there

My father in law has a lease there too, Back in the day we would ride all day and never see anybody. I have been all over the Harrisonburg hills.
They have some massive deer up there though... massive. The lease I am in now hasn't had a hunting club in there in 20 years

That's not helping. Can't you just boat right up there?

Yes you can. It's about 45min-hour boat ride south of Venice.

Port Eads way further down than Pilot Town. There's a marina there now I think with places you can rent, i'm told.

Port Eads is further than pilottown but it hasn't had any permanent residents (families) in a long time (probably 100+ years).

There used to be towns along the river in a few places south of Venice. Burwood (east bank near end of southwest pass), pilottown bayou (southwest pass then moved to where pilottown is now). The old timers even talk about towns along pass a loutre and a few other places down there.

I am thinking of this more as in: nothing close by, and not easy to get to in any way other than walking.

Why do I hear this error repeated over and over?

Buzzy died in 2011:

Fair enough. Did nobody die at Port Eads? I do know that someone rode out Katrina there, and could have sworn it was him.
