What kind of rig do you use for snapper?

(hook/weights/beads/swivels/etc)

80lbs flouro
waste of money. Just go pick you up dome 80# ande. At those depths flouro is a waste.

but other that that itsa about what i use, except more weight when current is ripping or im deep dropping and bigger hooks.

never heard of grouper going after knife jigs. I did have a school of amberjack hitting my knife jigs before the season ended... Talk about fun.

really? how far off bottom? I find once the snapper see it thats all your gonna catch? only luck i have had with grouper is dropping a butterflied hardtail to the bottom a little off of the structure and leaving it there.

I hadn't either until we caught a 60 lb warsaw on one.

as far as snapper tackle, I just carolina rig some 80 lb mono to a circle hook. weight depends on current.

medium to large

well you also got to think, you are looking at fishing the close rigs in your bay boat right? you arent going to catch near the size snapper we are talking about. you are most likely going to be catching right at the size limit, and in shallow water, 100 foot or less. So you really dont need big tackle.

4-12oz depending on current and depth

beads

Nope

swivels

300# rated

All this with 80# mono leader with 50-80# braid mainline. I prefer spinning tackle or light stand-up gear (jigging rods really).

The most successful snapper fisherman I know says to use huge circle hooks and load them up with bait...like 6 pogies, to make a bait ball out if it. He says the little ones will feed off of it until the big one shows up and swallows it all. He says you'll know when it happens.

With a 2 fish limit this sounds like it's worth trying. Size of hook is proportional to the size of fish you're targeting...makes sense, frick the small ones.

I use a 6/0 circle fished with a 1/2 oz to 1 oz sinker tied directly to 50 pound line so the sinker slides up the line.

I guess I fish deeper water with more current than most of you.

Large circle hook
12-36 oz sinkers depends on current
3' of 250 lb leader about 20" from hook use a crimp then a bead then sinkers then another bead and a heavy duty swivel.

I like as much weight as I can get so the bait goes where I want it but where the current takes it. This is all connected to 80 lb braid.

This is my exact setup also. I've had people tell me it was overkill with the leader but I don't like losing any fish.

With that heavy duty leader you don't have to gaff or net fish you just lift them over the side even if they are big it makes it MUCH easier IMO.

The other thing I think is important in heavy current is braid for your terminal line. It doesn't want to float like mono and as a result sinks quicker and keeps you out of the rig in strong current. Same reason I like a LOT of weight.
