you don't need lead to catch big snapper

What exactly qualifies someone as a successful snapper fisherman?

Ok I'll bite you are fishing in 450' of water with a 3 mph current the fish are suspended at 180', how do you catch said fish without lead?
Even if I am fishing in 70' of water I use lead maybe not as much though. If you are talking about chumming them up that works but not always, I would say I've had luck with that about 5% of the time.

With that heavy duty leader you don't have to gaff or net fish you just lift them over the side even if they are big it makes it MUCH easier IMO.

Prepare to be surprised...
Edit: Have fished with cgrand and we both cut our teeth fishing snapper higher in the water column than most everybody fishes. I haven't caught a 30lber in <100' but I've caught plenty in the 15-20# range with a few about 25# and I spend most of my snapper time in the 50-70' range because I get to keep more bycatch. Even in 400' as long as the current isn't ripping, I've found the size I'm looking for is <40' down more times than not. I have no desire to keep those ancient, monster snappers anyway unless it's in a tournament. If I only get 2, I'd prefer to maximize the size but <15#. Is that just me?

Yes just reel the fish up to the leader lift at the leader and put them in the boat. I did that last week with a 31# snapper no issue. Maybe there would be if you grabbed the braid but I grab the leader.

Well, truth be told, if you grabbed 80# braid with a 31# snapper on the end, you'd probably lose most of your fingers.

Agree I meant to put that in my response but forgot must have had to go back to work.

I knew what you meant but thought about how you described it and thought it was funny.

Were you not referring to picking up 31# with your hands and 80# spectra? If not, carry on, I'm sorry...
