If I sold my truck and bought a new truck I'd like to stay under $40k, preferably under $35k.
There's some decent diesel's you can get out there for that price. That's what i did. I drive 75 miles round trip, but at least diesels are known to hold up a little better. I get better mileage out of it than my Chevy that I had and a 100k mile diesel seems to hold value better than a 100k pickup

Get a cheap used car.. keep truck

out of those two options, I would keep the truck and buy a car for my daily driver. if you don't want two vehicles I would keep the current truck.

I say keep truck. Drive it. Don't get anything else because it doesn't make financial sense. Save that $20k or $400/month up and in a couple of years get yourself a nice new car. Keep truck for doing man's work as it's now depreciated enough it's not worth getting rid of and is cheap to insure and tag. Have yourself a nice car for everything else.

You can get nice little used cars for way less than 20k.

If it were me, I'd look into the new Chevy Colorado with the small Duramax. I know 2 people that have them w/ 4 wheel drive and get 30 mpg on the interstate. They are both very happy so far.
I'm not crazy about having 2 vehicle and having to keep up the maintenance/registrations/insurance etc.

If you must purchase, I'd go small car for sure; find something minimum 8 years old, well kept, with 50-70K miles, I wouldn't spend more than about 10K, honda, toyota, nissan,...
Mid sized trucks do not get the gas mileage you seek.

Like others have said, out of the 2 options, I'd buy a cheap car and keep the truck. I've been thinking about doing the same and have been looking at used 3 yr old nissans w under 50k miles for about $12k. My biggest thing is I love sitting higher up in a truck vs a car, esp on the interstate, so for now I prefer the truck and the bad gas.
But it makes more financial sense just to drive the truck till the wheels fall off if you like it. $12k can buy a lot of gas!

Very true, plus the expense of more insurance, maintenance, inspections, etc. Maybe if you had a teen within a couple years of driving, small car purchase could be a little more justifiable. Tough call.

Also, you can buy a lot of gas and pay for a lot of repairs for the cost of another or new vehicle IMO.
Yep. This idea hardly ever makes sense. I personally would just get you the truck with the best mileage you can find. Whatever that may be.
