What to do about my vehicle situation?

I'm currently driving an '11 Sierra 90 miles a day to work and the mileage is getting up there (150k). I either want to (1) get a relatively inexpensive car with better gas mileage to spare additional mileage on the truck or (2) sell my truck outright and buy a mid-sized truck that gets decent gas mileage. I will absolutely continue driving a truck but I can't decide which route to go. If I got a car and kept my truck I'd probably like to stay under $20k for the car. If I sold my truck and bought a new truck I'd like to stay under $40k, preferably under $35k. I don't really want to pay insurance on 2 vehicles, but if I got the car I'd probably drop down to liability on my truck which would save me a little bit. What you guys think?

You probably wouldn't see enough of an improvement for it to be worth it. I would just get a cheap & reliable car for the commute.

If it was me, since you have the truck and know what you got, I'd look into a car (one cheaper than $20k though). Also, you can buy a lot of gas and pay for a lot of repairs for the cost of another or new vehicle IMO.

I don't think buying a new vehicle will save you anything in the near-term. 150k is nothing.

IF you're looking for the cheapest mile, get a motorcycle. Now personally I wouldn't get one bc FL drivers suck BIGLEY but if the drivers near you are somewhat normal, this might be your answer.....other than those stormy days, cold as hell days & hot as frick days

I drive 50 miles a day in a midsize truck. Don't get a midsize truck for a commute.
I get crap gas mileage 18-20mpg and I lost the space of full size.

I was in a similar situation last fall. I went with a ne Tacoma. I got an SR, 4x4, V6, doulde cab. I am getting right at 22-23mpg on my daily 60 mile round trip commute.
I wish it had more interior storage, and the 6 speed behaved more like a 5 speed, but I am pretty happy with it.

Go get a Toyota Camry or Honda Accord.

Do you need to tow? If you need to tow you don't have many options.
If you just need a truck, you could get a tacoma and get 20-24 mpgs depending on your driving.
Personally, I'd probably keep your current truck and get a $8-12k honda civic, toyota, or something along those lines. Something that gets 25-40mpgs. No way I'd spend more than $15k on a car you are about to put 500 miles a week on. Driving something like a civic by yourself on the interstate will require very very little maintenance.

That's why I put the disclaimer in and I-4 says hello

Buy a sub 10K car for the commute and get liability only on both vehicles.

I kept my 03 Tahoe with 181k miles after buying a new GMC 2500 in December. Wife wanted me to sell it but for what I'd probably get for it, I feel it's better to have the 3rd vehicle when we have one in the shop. And since the roads are decent at my camp, I want to use the Tahoe up there as much as I can.

I had the same thoughts when I got my new job. I drive 135 miles round trip 4 times a week. I get 22 mpg in my truck. Did the math and I would only save $1000 a year in gas if I had a little car that got around 40 mpg. Gas is too cheap for it to make a huge difference
Start adding up double insurance, maintanence and paying a note for two cars and one just sit there, it's not worth it. Get a new truck and sell it around 100k miles before it loses a lot of value.

I drive 40k a year for work. I drive another 10k a year in my personal truck.
I have a Ford Fusion for my work commute and get 20mpg average. I can write the car off and I can also write off the miles I put on it too.

My wife's 16 Tahoe gets better gas mileage than my frontier.
