I've got a pheasant hunt in SD planned this fall. Our guide does not allow anything less than a 12 gauge.

With dogs or block hunting? I have hunted wild pheasants with a 20 behind dogs with no problems...

I was just comparing recoil. But to answer your question my kids first shotgun will be a pump. Makes them slow down and make their shots count more. If you give a kid an automatic you better be it rich to afford the shells that little bastard is going to burn

This....I started with a single shot 20 and could hit a dove with one shot...as I grew into an automatic it took three shots to get that dove

With both. This will be the fourth trip for some in our group with this same guide. I think he's just an old man set in his ways.

I got my first gun for my 10th birthday. It was a 20ga winchester youth model pump. I still use a 20ga for birds, but the only birds I hunt are doves. For small game birds, a 20ga is ideal, unless you're just a terrible shot.

With 3" shells he could even hunt turkeys, but probably not past 35-40 yards. But, if the bulk of his shooting will be at things larger than a dove or squirrel, a 12ga might be more appropriate. I don't think I'd start an 11 year old with one though.

You better believe it, all of these were killed with a Benelli M2 20 gauge using 2 3/4" shells..

If he can handle a 12, go with gas operated auto...... a gas gun will have less felt recoil than the inertia system
My nephew can handle the recoil from his Dad's old Remington 1100 20ga better than his own 410 crack barrel. I'd get him a used 20 gas autoloader for starters then once he's bigger and fully committed to hunting and gun care get him a nice new 12 gauge for Christmas.

This. I got my kid a 20 gauge 870 youth model pump and that thing kicked like a mule. My son is a big kid and even with his size, he hated to shoot it. Finally decided to just get him a Beretta 390 and be done with it. If I was doing it again, I would have started out with a cheap 20 auto and just feed him 1 shell at a time.

Poor shell selection. It is it biggest problem with recoil...

3" 4's is what I usually bought. Probably was shell selection but I still think the 20 auto is hands down a better choice.

If I were going to be a bird hunter and separated by distance, I would like to see him with a O/U. Mainly for an ease of insuring he is unloaded when he needs to be.

If I was going to be in a duck blind next to him, I would go with an auto loader or pump. I don't have a issue with shell use...he is only going to get one at the time.

I just think those little crack barrel singles are worthless.

Also regarding recoil, I have seen that most the times that recoil of any sort is an issue is if a child really isn't mature enough to be shooting anyway, that or poor form. Spend some time with them on clays or cans...whatever, just insure form is good and recoil is much easier to handle

I grew up with a Remington model 1100 20 gauge. Auto loading shotgun. I loved it and have slayed many a dove and squirrel with it.

Ya never outgrow a good 20ga. IMO you get even more fond of them as you get older. I own several good 12's. A couple Auto 5's, SBEII, M2,1100's,Wingmaster's. Gues which gun I pick up 99 out of 100 times to dove hunt with...... Rem. 1100 LT20. I am not a Remington supporter other than guns I already had before I said they could suck a dick. But between the Auto 5's and that little LT20 I feel I have some of the best auto's ever made

You will if it's a youth model. I do personally like to shoot my 20 auto at doves rather than my 12, especially if it is a hot field.

Always buy one they can grow with. I bought my daughter a SA-08 Weatherby that also came with adult stocks. Damn fine little auto 20 for the price
