I remember all the rounds I went through when my dad started me on his A5 20 gauge. There is definite truth to this statement.

I started with a 20 at about that age. My old man always said theres no bird a 12 gauge will kill that a 20 gauge wont. "Its all about shot placement" he'd say.
When I was in college I moved up to a 12 and to be honest my kill rate remained the same. Now as a late 30-something I've gone back to the 20. If you check out the patterns of a 20 and 12 which are comparably choked and at the same distance the difference isnt as much as you'd think.

My next shotgun will probably be a 20
My brother duck hunts with a youth 20ga (20 years old) and he doesn't cripple any more than I do.
I like the 12 more than the 20strictly 100% for buckshot. Otherwise, I don't have much use for the big 12

If you are shooting relatively close then that's fine but if you are reaching out 50+ with any regularity then a 12 gauge becomes superior just because you can shoot 3.5" shell with over an ounce and a half of shot. If you are shooting BB or bigger then the 10 gauge patterns better and brings it into the argument (obviously not for an 11 yo)

No doubt, theres certainly circumstances where the 12 or 10 becomes the clear choice...

An O/U or a SxS is going to be lighter and easier to carry in the field. In most circumstances it will handle better than a pump or auto...

Yea is definitely prefer to not try to shoot geese out of the stratosphere with a 20.
It's very hard to argue against a 12. In the old days, if you had a 12ga shotgun you could literally take care of all your hunting needs, from squirrel to deer, with one gun.

If you will only have one gun, but if you have never held a sub gauge o/u or sxs. A well built and balanced gun is like a wand...

Mine wouldn't be used for anything except deer if I had a 20. It already got replaced by a SxS .410 for rabbits/squirrels/doves

I've got a pheasant hunt in SD planned this fall. Our guide does not allow anything less than a 12 gauge. Obviously he may be flexible for a youth hunter but I'd reach out to your guide and see if he has the same requirements. Just something to consider when you decide on your shotgun.
