I have a nice thick lawn of St Augustine, but I need to level it off due to tree roots. What kind of sand should I get to keep from introducing weeds? I got white sand for a spot one time, but the sand seemed to wash away and all that was left was small pebbles of gravel.

Masonry sand is what is usually recommended.

Builder's sand or even a mix of builder's with top soil. You just don't want to have all the chemicals or large pebbles in it.

I thought masonry/builder's sand is what what i got last time, but there were tiny pebbles of gravel mixed in. Does masonry sand typically have this mixed in with it?

If you use any kind of sand keep an eye on any Bermuda or sedges that may come with it

What I've read about river sand, is that it's so smooth and that it doesn't "lock" together, then washes away.

I used masonry sand for brick mortar with good results. Its free of pebbles like sharp sand for mixing concrete. You are correct with sedges being an issue. The sand introduced several patches of it through the yard. However Image herbicide worked really well at getting the nutsedge under control. The results of leveling with masonry sand outweighed the inconvenience of needing to spray Image.

Mason sand is what you want to top dress your turf. Coarse sand has pebbles in it. Stay away from river sand and all the weeds that come with it. Use Milorganite fertilizer after the sand is applied and water it in.

Where did you get your masonry sand? Any sod supplier in the area?

THIS^^

has sand and some clay in it. Put a few shovels down and rake it a bit so any live grass blades can stick up. Keep doing adding and raking occasionally and try not to kill the grass.

The clay that is in the river sand will help bind it together and help it stay in place. This is the best way to go.

River sand has weed seeds in it and should be avoided. Torpedo grass is spread by root segments in river sand. Terrible choice.

You can use any clean white sand. If the sand has pebbles in it you can remove them if you want to.

If you are between BR and NO, river sand is best.

I would usually fill a bucket from the ballpark. Sand sinks to lowest spot.
