the reason bigger trout are being caught in the western part of the state is more because of the difference in habitat features between the two areas, east and west.
If you are a trout and are in the western part of the state, where to you have to go inland at?
In between Vermillion Bay and Lake Charles is pretty damn barren as far as landscape features go.
So you have the shipping channels in Lake Charles which provide closed, protected, safe, cooler and saltier waters.

I'm headed to the Chandeluer Islands late September - Should I expect to be disappointed?

Fair enough, but what would you recommend? 1 trout over 25"? Though, trout live such a short time, why release that fish when it will probably die sooner rather than later in the wild?
Honestly I've never caught anything over 4 so I really can't fathom filling an ice chest with fish that size......not would I want to. The perfect eating speck is a 12".

I just know as our coast continues it's rapid loss, the carrying capacity will follow suit. Larger trout has a better chance of survival than those 11" fish. I'm withholding judgement for another couple years, Id like to see what the BP spill impact is going to be long term.

One shrimp boat kills more than all rec fisherman combined.

The summer was always the hottest part of the year for commercially caught yellowfin. That's when they spawn in the gulf.
I can't speak for east of the river, which I understand is the spawning grounds, but green canyon always gets a lull bout this time of year. That hasn't happened yet.

What's yf have to do with speckled tees?

I meant that if y'all are worried about the population dwindling because of high numbers being caught, you have nothing to worry about because no one is catching limits.

Big Lake trout been weighing 130, just the head, figured it was all spill related

5lb trout are not the big breeders.

I realize they don't carry the population, but they do pass on the big fish gene and produce many times more eggs than a 2lb fish.

I didn't know Conundrum had moved his charter operation and his scale to big lake.

Specks spawn in huge aggregations, and millions of eggs drift. I highly doubt that one 11 pound gator in a school of 150 fish has a better shot at getting hers fertilized than a 14" fish even if she lays 5x the eggs.

Sure she does, it's a numbers game and if only 30% of the eggs are fertilized and she lays 8mill and the little ones lay 1mil, she's done quite well.

We're not floridians, so let's please stop calling them gators.

St are you sure about that? I could have sworn that I read recently a state biologist state the exact opposite.

Still haven't landed one buddy? Go borrow Cons scale, you'll have a 12lber in no time. Have an infant hold it way out away from him, then you can join gator club too.

I'm going off what G Horst told me. I'm about to get my books out.
