This has been shown to be false by just about every study and model run in the last 10 years. Creel and size limits just don't have that kind of impact on a species with such high natural mortality and reproduction rates. It defies all conventional knowledge, but it's all about the area and habitat, not the rod and reel when it comes to specks.

I think some of these problems are cyclical things and the river has been higher than normal for the past 3 years which has to effect some things.
I know a lot of the guides in Venice are bitching about fish numbers but there are also a lot more guides than there used to be.
I've had trouble catching trout in Venice inshore. It may be a high river thing or my fishing skills may be slipping.

The last two years in Venice have been very difficult until about this time of year. WE started pounding them late July last year and the same has happened this year. Don't know what that's from high river or just changes in the ecology down there. It's been a TOUGH two years on trout in Venice.
However I have noticed a change in the trout this year especially. Lots of under 12" lots of 18" and bigger but very few 13-16" trout. It is my theory that something happened to that 2-4 year old fish weather it was the oil spill, the dispersant or something else I believe something happened to a years worth of young trout somewhere along the line. Not science, just opinion of someone fishing the same area for over 30 years.

I think this is 99.99% of the issue. Trout just aren't where people expected them to be, so it's natural to think something is wrong. Hell, just the opposite has happened with yft fishing this year. Boats are hitting double digits like crazy and catching bigger fish than any year since I've been fishing offshore, in the hottest part of the summer when it's "supposed to be dead." Thanks BP, you made a generation of retard tuna that like to be caught hatch.

As someone mentioned above, areas that were heavily oiled appear to have had poor spawns. That's why we are catching either nice trout are dinks. It's been tough for a lot of people, myself included. Kill them one day, struggle next day with same conditions, exception is around the Atch delta. Area has been steady, everybody should go there.

The only place I've heard of people catching good has been at the shallow water rigs out of main pass. I have fished euratich bay, gaspers, catfish bend (out of flat boat/Raphael to pass a loutre), and redfish bay (from caddro to southeast pass) and haven't caught one trout yet. I'm fishing with artificial. They may be biting on live bait.

From what I understand......not a damn thing. Places that produced big trout are still producing big trout....no more, no less.

The summer was always the hottest part of the year for commercially caught yellowfin. That's when they spawn in the gulf.

I don't follow the reasoning either.
ETA: To expand on that. If the trout population were already depleted, you would run it into the ground if you waited until people were catching limits every time out.

Why do you think that is the case? Because it's happening there doesn't mean it will happen in another area.

Not sure about that, but from everything I've read it hasn't created the amount of trophy fish they were claiming when they instituted these rules.
