I have read bad review about the Stihl's lately, but I believe it is probably all brands and ethanol related. I don't think you can go wrong with Stihl or Echo, just try to find some ethanol free gas to put in it.

Got an Echo for a wedding present. After 15 years it is on its last leg, but it ran great for a loooong time. I've seen its replacement Echo at Home Depot. Around $200-225.

My dad has a stihl weedeater that i've become very familiar with over the years. I'm 24 now and he got it back when i was 17 or 18. Still runs like a champ. Used it last summer around his house to earn a few bucks. It's atleast 6 years old.

Go with the Stihl. I have run a mowing/landscaping business for 9 years and I still use some of my original weedeaters. They run great. Do not buy a 4 stroke.. they are terrible. I would say a echo and husquvarna are my 2nd choice.

I had a 2-stroke straight shaft Husqvarna that i bought at lowe's for about $250. Ran good for one season then crapped out. Had trouble finding someone to work on it. Will never buy another.....Stihl or Echo from here on out.

I use Echo for my lawn biz, they are awesome.go take a look at them you won't be sorry. Home Depot has them on the rack ready to go and not a bad price and 5 yr warranty as well.

To the OP.....I posted the same thing about two weeks ago. Based on the replies that i received, I went with the Echo with the Shindaiwa a close second (it was a bit overkill for just normal home use). The Echo starts easy and had plenty of power. The line reloading is extremely simple. Paid right at 250.

I've had a Shindiawa for 12yrs now and it cranks up every year. In case you or other don't know always mix your oil with super unleaded gas for 2 strokes. It leaves less residue.

This...

I started doing this in my lawnmowers as well. I will never put regular in a small engine again!

Does it really make a big difference?

I don't go through more than a few gallons every summer, so it definitely makes sense money-wise.

Thanks for the heads-up.

Yea it does. It burns the oil better. I guess the higher octane gas burns a little quicker and a little hotter.

FWIW the newest issue of consumer reports list in this order 1-4
Stihl FS45
Stihl FS40CE
Stihl FS45C
Echo SRM-225

From $150-220 and be sure to use stabil everytime you fill the gas can or ethanol will eat stuff up like crazy.
