I have an 18.5 ft bay boat and was running about half throttle and quartering the chop in Timbalier bay. I was running along all nice and calm and all of a sudden I hit a very large wave (3-4 feet) that must have been a crew boat wake. The way it hit caused my boat to jerk to one side and threw me against the gunwale. I stayed in the boat but I was tossed far enough to pull the kill switch. I could have very easily went over the side.

I always wear my life vest and kill switch when running. Once it becomes habit you hardly notice it.

Jason, trying to defend yor defenseless statement is a losing position. If you are near full speed in an average bay or flat boat and hit a submerged well pipe there is a good chance you would be ejected. All you experience cannot overcome the laws of physics.

Agree.....same principle as hard turn on a wave runner at WOT to induce 360 and trying to hold on. Sometimes you can, sometimes you get thrown. Why not be safe?

I talked to a buddy of mine who was working at the hospital today. Said they are gonna have to do several operations to try to fix it. Said it was horrific looking.

I found the guy who was thrown out in the hospital. He is at memorial.

Got quick surgery and was able to save his hand. Dr. Weber, probably the best hand surgeons in the area, was able to save has hand and he has intact neuro and motor function.

Saw a picture of it too. It was not pretty. Ya'll probably saved his life with the tourniquet. The prop missed his radial artery by about 2 cm. If it cut that, he would have bled out in a matter of minutes.

Thanks doctor!! So glad to hear that man. Really rooting for him. I appreciate you coming to update. I called the ldwf again today and they wouldn't tell me anything. Figured kplctv might pick something up but they haven't given us any news either.

Can you find out how he was tossed out? Steering cable broke? Hit something? Driver error?

Appreciate it.

When I'm driving my hands are on the steering wheel. If I am doing something in my boat where I'm not holding on to my steering wheel, my throttle is in neutral. I can understand other people falling out the boat but not the driver.

I knew someone who was alone in the boat and fell out. It was a pretty fast rig. One of the steering cables popped while at probably 3/4 throttle or so. Motor cut completely to one side. He went through the hull.

For someone who has been on the water as long as you have you sure seem hard headed.

Obviously some people aren't reading my posts. I never once said you shouldn't wear your kill switch or that it is a bad idea to wear your kill switch.

I said it is pretty hard to fall out of a boat in normal operation unless you are driving crazy. I also said that an accident (hitting a well head, something submerged, collision, etc) changes that.

Yeah, I have to confess, I've ridden in and even driven dozens of bayboats w numerous different captains, and never remember a single one wearing the kill switch. Just not something we've thought about. Will think about it now.

I didn't worry about mine until I got a fast boat. I started wearing mine and it was a while before I realized the kill switch didn't work. All it is basically is a contact, so they will wear out. Just adding this so yall will know to test them from time to time.

Heard he bent down to do something with his ice chest and hit the wake of another boat. Lost his balance and fell out. All info is second hand ( no pun) at best.

Thanks infidel. I was wondering about that. He's from Alexandria area. I wondered if he maybe was more inexperienced with larger bodies of water and larger wakes causing him an issue if he had a poor approach and it began to chatter or walk on him...

Lost three friends because of no life vest or kill switch one was a very experienced boater. Him and his wife Both thrown out and drowned on Lake Ray Roberts test driving a new Champion. The other one same story.
I have my kill switch cord snapped to my vest on the RH Side and just leave the vest there. No prob. Just put it on and go , take it off when I turn the boat off.

I have never heard of anyone falling out of their boat while operating it either, but I know several incidents where people have been thrown from a boat while operating it!
If you operate a boat long enough in the skinny waters of South Louisiana, you will eventually hit some debris or other obstruction. Depending on your speed and the angle of impact, you and everyone else aboard could easily be ejected.
I once hit an unseen, unrecorded obstruction at WOT. I was thrown into the console so forcefully, it felt like I had run into a brick wall.

Good to know. I'll test mine and, after reading this thread, start using it and wearing my life jacket when underway.

When looking through the USCG accident statistics most people will be very surprised at the number of fatalities that occur when the boat is not under way.
