What’s the board’s preferred weapon for walking around /farm sidearms?

I was carrying a S&W M&P .40 Performance CORE that’s about 12 years old. After doing some research I realized it’s just not enough to kill a pig on the run or at any distance more than 5-10 feet.

So I’m bored and looking for a new holster weapon.
Budget: $1,200
TIA

Usually a sig 365 or ruger single six.

Sounds like you need a .454 casull.

You don't get real horsepower out of any handgun until you get to .44 magnum levels. Wrong excuse to buy a new gun.

Glock 20 is the universal correct answer for a self shucking killing stuff handgun, but 10mm still sucks just a little bit less than every other auto handgun caliber.

Are you trying to hunt pigs or trying to defend yourself against them? The 40 is definitely adequate for fighting off, or more than likely, scaring off a pig. If it were legal to carry on public land during bow season without a concealed permit, I’d be carrying my Glock 23 40 cal. If you’re wanting to hunt them and wanting a semi-auto, I’d say a 10mm. If you’re not worried about weight or action, I’d say a revolver in 357 or 454 casull would be my gun of choice. Probably the 454 because they’re cool lol

Have you ever shot one? The recoil is atrocious. The muzzle blast is even worse. I'm not sure why they even exist. The biggest pig on earth isn't going to stop a stiff .44 mag or .45 colt hard cast load.

The good thing about .454 casull is that used ones with only 1 round through them are plentiful and you can shoot the hottest .45 colt load you could dream up through them.

Consider this a PSA for everyone - don't F with a 454 casull.

Damn OP . Thats way more fire power than I pack in the woods. I keep an old ruger single six with half snake shot / half hollow points. 22 Magnum.
The single action gives me that nostalgic cowboy vibe.

Most folks have zero chance of hitting a moving object farther than 10 feet away.

Are you shooting JHPs or FMJs out of that .40?

that research is BS .... disregard what you read and ask the OB as many have real world experiences with pistol hunting. Your current S&W .40 is fine. "killing" an animal or defending yourself all comes down to bullet selection and shot placement. If you want to be proficient with your firearm, you gotta practice in various situations.

S&W model 29 Mountain Gun is my usual choice, but I've recently adopted a Springfield 10mm that I like too

context is important though, I don't live in the South any more but if I did either of these would probably be overkill (not that there's anything wrong with that)

Look, I was just trying to get a new gun. I know the .40 with a well placed shot will do the job against 90% of North American animals.

.40 S&W should be sufficient in killing a hog. We have killed many with a 9mm. Just gotta hit them in the brain pan.

All 3 top popular hand gun rounds, 45ACP, .40S&W and 9MM all produce similar wound channels in comparable media. Just choose what you are comfortable with using and go with that.

Unless you are in bear country, you really shouldn't need anything bigger than that. If in bear country, then start carrying something bigger.

Now..If you hate your hands, then get something like this: Magnum Research BFR in .45-70

Not in a handgun, but I used to have a tc encore with a 20” 460 barrel and I would shoot 454 casulls out of it. It was a fun little gun. Wouldn’t be bad for hunting thick woods during primitive season either.

Yeah, if you are partial to semiautomatic, 10mm is the way to go.

I used to walk around d with a Judge so I could have the 410 shells for snakes, plus the 45 for pigs and such. But the 10mm Glock 20 is what carry now in the woods.

In that case, Colt Delta Elite or a Sig P220

10mm in both.
It's the best mm

Personally I carry either a S&W M&P 22 compact or a Sig P322

Either wears a silencer.
I will say that I do not have pigs yet.
