it’s just not enough to kill a pig on the run or at any distance more than 5-10 feet.

Isn't that exactly what a "walk around the woods sidearm" is for? If you're wanting to do more maybe a TC Contender in 35 Remington?

Edit: Screw the 35 Rem... based on his comments the OP needs a Contender in .45-70 or .444 Marlin.

The TC Contender is a sidearm... barely; hand cannon might be a better description! I shot one in .35 Remington and it was not pleasant. They also come in .444 Marlin and 45-70 but I'm not pulling the trigger on one of them.

And trying to come up with a good explanation for the wife? Been there, done that... and it never worked for me. Just buy what you want and brace yourself for the consequences!

I carry a snub nose, hammerless, 5 shot Taurus in .38 and load with rat shot and solids. Walking around I don’t need more than that. More for copperheads than anything else.

If tracking a deer after dark, might grab a shotgun or AR to sling over my shoulder. No hogs here, so I would be shooting coons or coyotes.

If you want something for what you describe, get the full sized Glock 10mm. If you want to kill hogs on a dead run maybe a T/C in .243? It’s still a pistol!

What about a mossberg shockwave in 20 gauge? I have never had any personal experience with them and know it’s not a sidearm, but it seems like you’d have plenty of wallop with 3” shells plus manageable recoil in a small package.

Taurus Judge. Either using a .45 or a .410 (birdshot or buckshot), it's a fun little toy to keep on your hip, especially if you are not a fan of snakes.
