For 90% of what you use them for, it is superior. It is much faster (especially if you're cutting your own bags) and the bags are much cheaper.

It's a much better quality product that does a better job. It's up to the user if the price tag is worth it. For you, obviously, it's not.

I also own a vacmaster vp112 and highly recommend. This isn't the yeti of sealers deal. They are big and you have to have a place to leave them out. It's not something you can pickup every time.

Once you have one it would be hard to live without.

Sounds just like the Yeti of vacuum sealers, that is unless it can't live up to the hype.

Combo chamber/external bag

My foodsaver is on it's last legs. This looks interesting, could be the best of both worlds.

I mean not really. I just cut longer bags if I need to. It seems with that vacmaster I would have both a length and a width limit.

sorry. Didn't see your post. I just don't ever bag stuff larger than the bags for the vacmaster. I do see your concern tho and it is a legit one if you bag big offshore species fillets.

I've used a vac master for hours a day for weeks at a time in college. I'm not talking out of my arse, they're still finicky and the sealing element does wear out over time. It also wasn't a hell of a lot faster than the newer food savers.

If you want to spend $700 for vacuum sealer so you can save a few pennies on bags go for it but it's not for everyone.

A cheap vacuum sealer is still better than a freezer bag, which is infinitely better than wrapping something in wax paper.

i found it impossible to seal meats that i wanted marinated with my foodsaver. I like to marinate meats then hit them with hard vacuum. Just marinates so much better when under vacuum.

I don't think you're talking out of your arse. But to say they are overkill isn't necessarily true. Especially if you're packing away multiple limits of fish or putting up big game. The vac and seal process is quicker on its own, it's much quicker when you factor in cutting food saver bags and sealing the other end.

You're talking about the heating element going out over time...You'll never touch that amount of work with a food saver. People go through multiple food savers, they don't have near the service life of a vacmaster.

Vacmaster will last as long as several food savers, the bags are way cheaper, they are much quicker, it does a better job.

Food Saver will cost less up front and it doesn't take up as much space.

It may not be for everyone, but it's certainly not ridiculous for an individual to own one.

I previously owned two foodsaver brand which were roughly $100 models. Then I realized a $100 vacuum sealer really isnt worth a damn it just doesnt work. In my opinion you have to get into at least the $300 range before its worth a crap. I then bought a Weston it is unreal the difference and my unit cost around $400. I have done alot of vacuum packing since I have had a small business making food products with seafood and selling at farmers markets plus packing 4 or 5 deer a year.

I never said it was ridiculous for any individual to own one, but it is ridiculous to recommend one to someone who hasn't needed one up to this point.

OP - "I'm thinking I might enjoy shooting soup cans for fun"

Everyone else - "10/22, perfect plinker"
MJ2 and DSD - "338 Laupa at tannerite you'll end up there anyway"

I get by with my vac sealer...I would like the chamber kind but they were pricey and like stated limits the length. I get the 3 packs of ribs from costco/sames and freeze them separately a lot. I like the looks of that combo unit.

Also as for freezing liquids in a regular foodsave....freeze the liquid first...pop it out of the container...foodsave it...profit.

Same goes for fresh sausage or burger patties or whatever else you dont want smashed in the foodsaver.

That's my only real concern. Obviously it's a major upgrade from a foodsaver. It's just nice to be able to seal long redfish filets and bigger fish filets with no problem.

The search continues.

So what is the advantage of chamber sealing vs bag other than with liquids? I have never had a chamber style...I just alter how I do the bag stuff.

The food saver I have has a setting for moist foods that I use for marinating. It also has a marinate setting but I think that does a series of vaccume and release for 10 min.

This is some chicken with the moist setting I did this morning.

Its $500. After all the money we spend on fishing and hunting it is well worth it.

chamber sealer puts its contents in twice the amount of vacuum an external sealer does. It's pretty amazing to see how hard it hits the contents in the bag. I threw a hamburger bun in one time to see what it would do to it and it flattened the thing to almost paper thin.

You can alter the amount of vacuum it will produce and the bags are like 1/4 the price.
