OB,
I think the time has come to finally get rid of my '03 Z71. It got in a wreck in January and just hasn't been the same since. I'm moving to New Orleans in May and will have long commutes to Hammond couple times a week at least.
Been thinking about something more gas-friendly and economical for living in New Orleans. Still need something to throw the duck hunting shite, dog, kayak in. I'm thinking of getting a 2000-2005 Tacoma prerunner. Any suggestions? Specific year I should look for?

if you're looking for better mpg, the v6 wont get you there. my full size ford gets better than my friends 4x4 v6 tacoma. solid truck and fun to drive but burns some gas

This. Not the one to get if gas mileage is your primary concern.

So um, not quite the point of this thread but I was really disappointed when I found out they don't sell Toyota Hilux's in the US... Top gear has me believing they are indestructible.

What about the 4 cylinder pre-runners? Same story on gas?
Can't believe I'm considering going from v-8 to 4 cyl but I don't think I can keep affording 13-15 mpg

if its 2wd you'll save. even the v6 is better than what you're getting, but not by much. id say 16-20. with the i4, its low 20s on the highway I think. BUT if you look at new 150/1500s these days, they get the same mileage. My dad got 22 from lafayette to br the other day. don't know if you're going strictly used or can afford new.

As much as I'd like a full-size truck that gets 20mpg, there's no way I can afford a newer model with the better fuel economy. Just ain't gonna happen
Jimbeam: one can dream some day my pops has a 2012 f150 and gets 21-23. No way I can afford anything new like that

You won't get 13-15 in a Tacoma. I've had an 05, an 07, and now a '12. The worst I've averaged is 17 in my 07 running 33x12.50 tires. My 05 averaged 20.5 with 265/75/16s and I've averaged a little over 19 with my '12 running 32s. All three were/are v6 Double Cab 4x4s. The 05 was a long bed, the 07 and 12 short beds.
If you need a little more size you need to be looking for an 05+ year model. Anything before 05 will be the smaller 1st generation Tacoma.
Sure, on the highway a new full sized will get the same mileage as a Tacoma, but if you drive in town much the Tacoma will get 2+ mpg better than a full sized truck.
Mileage stats on my '12 since I've owned it (anything 05 or newer would be comparable)

Huge help
Problem again though is $. I'd like the newest model I can afford. May just have to settle for an '03 or '04 though. I'm guessing the mileage would improve a little with an older models being smaller?

I drive very fast. Had a 99 single cab 4wd with the 2.7L and got 16 on the highway. I'd imagine it would hit 20-22 if I slowed down 20 or 30mph.
Also had a 04 3.4L extended cab 4wd TRD. Really nice truck, and I couldn't break it. That speaks volumes if you knew me. I think it got 18mpg when I drove it back the day I got it(80,mom was in truck). I put Swampers and a lift shortly after, so you can't really go off of that.
If you get a pre-runner, make sure it is a TRD. Not sure, but I think the locker doesn't have limitations on a pre-runner like a 4wd. The locker is awesome compared to an open diff. There are also 4 different rear end gearing combinations. I think the TRD had two different ones
01-04 are all the exact same. Like I said, I couldn't break mine. It was a very solid truck. If you get a 4cyl, get the 5-speed.

With a 4cyl the older Tacomas will usually get a little better.
With a V6 the second generation Tacomas get a little better mileage, especially in town. While the 4cyl Tacos are the same engine the V6s were upgraded from a 3.4l to the current 4.0L Dual VVTI.
An AT V6 2nd gen will also get slightly better mpg than a manual.
The resale on 4x4 Tacos is insane, but if you are looking for a 2x4 you should be able to get in an 05 model for a reasonable price.

This is what I had originally thought as well. I hate to get rid of my Z71 but its been a POS since the wreck.

I had an 01 four banger prerunner four door. Got 20 in it. I now have an 07 4runner with a six that gets 22ish. They make a hell of a truck and they last like nothing else. I say go for it but do get the 4 cylinder if you want better mileage.

what he said. I've got on 05 and love it. I wouldnt say its unbelievable on gas mileage but its pretty good. I would assume the newer models have better gas mileage.
